Bug Out/Combat Pistol

With a .357 revolver you can shoot all kinds of ammo with it. Not just .357, .38spl.

You can shoot .38S&W, .38 long Colt, .38 Short Colt, .38 Super, 9mm, 9mm Makarov (9X18), and 380 (9X17).

You have to use a bit of wire to make a rimmed case (or if your revolver is set up for moon clips your GTG) for the Super 9mm's, etc., but in a pinch, they can be shot from a .357 mag revolver.

So add some bailing wire to your BOB if you carry a .357.

You know 9x18 Makarov uses a .363 bullet right. Your gonna try to squeez a bullet .006 overbore down a .357/.358 barrel bad things are likely to happen. May not blow up the gun but id bet one gets stuck in the bore turning your pistol into a club. Hey I love my .357 revolver but ain't gonna think about that. Also 9mm bullets may not stabilize and might tumble. I tried using some .355 124 bullets in my .357 and got some nice side profiles in the target at 5 yards. YMMV but you need to try it before you rely on it

Interesting story about how grandpa got his Luger war trophy. During the ultimate "Bugout of 1945" a German officer shot grandpa in the chest and grandpa shot the captain in the chest with his 1911A1. Grandpa said that 9mm hole never kept him from smoking his two packs of Camels a day habit but apparently the Nazi quit smoking the hard way.

Interesting note is we must have won the war because my relatives all claimed to have shot "officers" a tradition going back to 1776.

Interesting story indeed, although I wonder if the outcome would have been different if 147gr Federal HST existed back then.

Ahh, good point, in that case I would be armed, I'd take a HK MP/22 with a red dot scope and laser, of course I'd want sling, high cap mags and a side arm holstered with at least 2 high cap mags, SAO pistol but most likely a Glock 20. But it all depends on how bad it is out there, is everyone toting a rifle? Can I travel in the day? Are roads open? it there nuclear debris everywhere? If it's really bad I'd take more of a sniper position and use a scoped 308.

Depending on the situation, would depend what I feel is needed. Worst case scenario is there no electricity and it's a mess out there, I would go by foot with gun in hand, but where would I go? If I don't have something at home, I won't be able to get it out in the World most likely.

Neighborhoods would need to set-up perimeters and block off specific access points. It would be idea to set up 24 hour security and have block Captains, no one in or no one out. You could trade within your neighborhood group. If you had to head out, go in groups of 4-6 well arm people, get what needs getting and head back to your block.

That's really the best I think it can be.

I'm on the same page as TripleThreat. Although I have 2 places to go, if I really, really, really need to leave my house.

I have several "BIBs" (Bug In Bags). That contain items necessary to stay at home and defend the family. They're small/lightweight and a BOB can be donned without hampering access to the BIB if we have to leave .

I think Shtf minimum magazines needed is 5 as others will point out.

I would choose my hk over my 226 because I got more seat time on it. Chambered in 9mm

I need more mags.

My bugout bag has a HK USP 9 in it. I chose that gun because it has proven to be the most reliable handgun I own. Out of my collection, it's also the gun that my gf shoots the best.

If I had to throw just one handgun in a bag w ammo and get out asap it would be this as well. I am more accurate with my SW1911 and Wilson Combat CQB but the HK USP9c has proven over the years it will not jam no matter how hard I try. And I could throw in a lot more rounds of 9mm into a bag than .45.

If wasn't for me randomly buying this from another Calgunner and feeling comfortable w this platform, I understand how a lot of answers would be Glock 17/19 or S&W M&P 9. Reliability comes first in this situation and something that requires lowest maintenance possible. My S&W M&P 9 would be second on my list- it just works and never one issue since day 1.

I love how people insinuate that they can just "find" ammo in a bugout situation. That might work in a Resident Evil video game but you're not going to just find a random box of ammo sitting on some un-attended counter in a store/police station if everything has gone to hell.

Are we talking about the true survival 1-3 or the WTF button smash QTE zombie bashing 4-6? I mean ammo is pretty scarce in 1-3 and often hidden behind come ridiculously over the top puzzle box......... (off topic)
