Smith and Wesson M&P C.O.R.E.. It sounds like you want a 9mm and the Pro/Core both come with extended slides. You can mount optics to the Core down the road if you want too.

funny you mention this. when I was out shooting my RO9 for the first time, I also shot my cousins m&p pro 9, and I shot groups tighter than the RO. But its probably because I cant seem to get used to the target sights. I'm considering getting one of those as well.

Another option to consider if you are a fan of John Browning's 1911 but prefer the 9mm round is the Hi-Power. It is an older gun, but a true classic. Feels great in the hand.
The trigger is not as nice as the 1911, but it is nicer than a lot of modern day guns. One of those must have additions for a collector.

Seriously though, once you strike the Glock off the list and remove them from the equation there are a lot of exciting guns to choose from. None that I personally like more than a Glock, but a ton that have peeked my curiosity.

The 1911 is always a nice choice. If this is your first 1911 you might consider the 45acp. They are easier to find in 45acp, and unlike with a polymer gun a steel frame 1911 absorbs a lot of the felt recoil making it very managable. If you were ever going to consider the 45acp round, the 1911 is your chance to do it painlessly. The gun will be heavy though. So if you plan to carry it at any point you might consider the lighter aluminum frame models. You will pay more for them and you will feel the recoil more, but they won't pants you in public while carrying. That said, if the 9mm floats your boat go for it. I certainly would not mind owning it. It is a nice gun. I'm just saying, you don't necessarily need to fear a 45acp if that's an issue for you. As far as they go, the 1911 is a pretty painless way to be introduced to the round.

I had a chance to checkout the FN FNS 9MM at shot show. It is a pretty impressive addition to the striker fired "glock killer" offerings on the market today. It's got a nice size to it, good looking, nice trigger pull, nice reset, everything you could want...if you can find one. You might need to SSE it, because its new and I am not sure if it is on the roster. I never looked because I am not in the market for one at the moment.

The M&P is the most popular so called "Glock Killer" out there. More so than the XD. Very comfortable, a little heavier trigger and longer reset than a Glock but about the same as the XD if I remember correctly. It's a sexy gun. I think I would give the nod the FNS over it though. Althought the M&P would be easier to find and no SSE.

Sig has a new striker fired gun out. The 336 I think? Could be wrong about that number. It's not the 250 (avoid that one - the DAK trigger is a nightmare on it). It has a short pull, short reset, and it is comfortable and good looking. My only complaint is that it is really chunky...even the compact version is very large compared to offerings from other companies.

Or just go with the Springfield XD if you like it. It is all about what you like. It is a good looking gun with a large following in its camp.

Haha I was waiting for you to come at me because the Glock comment haha. Thanks for the reply. This would not be my first 1911, and the one I still own is a 45. One reason I was sticking to 9mm is because I wanted something in 9mm I could let the wife and daughter use (although my wife prefers the .40, go figure). While I'm working on getting a 9mm slide for my Sig, I wanted a dedicated 9mm that I don't mind beating up and letting friends use.
That's the reason I was leaning towards the RO. I figured the single stack would help anyone regardless of their hand size and a 9mm on a steel gun would help tame the recoil.

Are their frames any different from the regular M&P 9s? I ask because both my wife and I didn't like the way it felt in our hands...we're little people haha

If its primary use is going to be competition (even if it isn't) I'd go M&P Pro 5'' in 9mm.

Ooooh. You raise an old want if mine. The only two guns I've ever used for CCW were a XDm9 3.8 and my old Springer TRP. That TRP was relatively uncomfortable and I vowed to get a carry size 1911... that might be a game changer. Only problem is if any local LGSs have an off roster one available... like the Sig Nightmare Carry?
