DA/SA for noob...

Hello Calgunners:
Still in the process of a first purchase of a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. I have decided that minimizing any AD/ND is going to be a parameter in addition to overall tactile feel. Any comparisons from users who have actively shot two or more DA/SAs? Prefer polymer or alloy, in the range of a 4" barrel for under $700. Your comments would be appreciated.

FNX-9 cant go wrong with that. I've shot the 92FS for years also and loved it but its a heavy gun.

I have shot Sig's and a couple of HK's and the Beretta 92. I am not a fan of the DA/SA. I just can't stand the DA pull.

I have decided to stick with SA or striker fired weapons.

You will have to try them and see what works for you.

Sig sp2022 is well under your budget. I've shot them but I prefer the p229 which is a bit over your budget, I just don't like they polymer. I'd save up for that if it were me. Beretta m9 or 92 would be a great choice but barrel length is a little longer than you are looking for.

Taurus PT-92, Beretta 92FS, Walther P-38 (The Original DA/SA Pistol), Walther P-1 (alloy frame version of the P-38), Smith & Wesson 39, 59 and 645, SAR B6P (Copy of the EAA Witness; which is a modified copy of the CZ-75).

These are all guns that I have owned or currently own or have shot that are DA/SA 9mm pistols.

I started and ended the list with my two favorites: The Taurus PT-92 and the SAR B6P. I come from the 1911 world and it was the first gun I carried for work. I was trained in the "Cocked and Locked" carry mode and that is what I like.

Though the PT-92 and the SAR are DA/SA they have one thing in common that I really like. Both can be carried in Condition 1; Cocked and Locked.

While the SAR is not on the roster it can be had for well under your budget with plenty of money left for extra magazines, holster, ammo, etc.

The Taurus is on the roster and it too would come in way under your price range.

the compact Sig Sauer P225 fits your criteria (9mm - DA/SA - alloy frame - 3.9" barrel). the magazine capacity is 8 (8+1).

the P225 arguably has the best ergonomics of any P series Sig Sauer handgun ever manufactured. the grip of the P225 typically pleases those with large hands and those with small hands as well. the P225 is known for the 'balance' (weight distribution) that Sigs with stamped carbon steel slides (german manufacture) are notably admired for by their owners. the P225 is a pleasant shooter that impresses with stout reliability.

i've owned examples of the P225 since the 1980s. i picked up a w german P225 CPO about 7 years ago and it has become my favorite semi-auto.

If avoiding NDs is an issue, you might want to look for a gun that also has a safety. Many here on Calguns dislike safeties on handguns, but for some, they have their place. The Beretta 92 has a safety and a decocker and is DA/SA; Sigs, in contrast, are DA/SA with no safety. HK USPs (a used one might be in your price range but probable a bit higher) have a nice arrangement, and multiple variations. 1911s have a safety but are single action only.

You might look at the S&W 3rd generation - they have weird number names like 4506, and 3914, but all are laid out like a Beretta 92, with a slide-mounted lever that is (usually I think) both a safety and decocker. They're also all metal, which I prefer. Plastic is nice for carry because its lighter, but metal feels better, imo. There are usually a few in the marketplace.

Also, if you consider yourself a noob, seriously consider a pistol course. You can learn a ton about handling.

I don't think a DA/SA is inherently safer over a striker fired. I have both kinds.

I have an SP2022, M9A1 (92FS-ish), and a GP100 (OK, so not a semi). DA pulls are long but I do have the option to cock the hammer. Certainly would carry like that but you haven't said that's a requirement.

You might consider:

Beretta Storm. DA/SA with ambi safety. Picatinny rail.

CZ 75 Compact. DA/SA with safety. All steel. No rail

Get an instructor (not your buddy "who has been around guns all his life"), learn and then buy the weapon that you shoot best.

as others have pointed out ND has nothing to do with the gun and everything to do with the operator. training is required. as for the gun, here is my vote:
you can get a brand new CZ P-07 with a CGW works trigger job for $700 from CGW. You will need to SSE it. Mine has the DA @7.5lb and the SA @ 3.3lbs and of course the SRS, trigger relocation, etc.
