I sweat a lot. Just need to wipe down the gun after carrying.
Look at my Shield, it's like that almost everyday.

OMG! I have a rust spot on my pistol! What will I do?

No, I wasn't drunk when I wrote the post. And no, I am not the one with rust on my stainless steel slide, thank you.

When pistol gets used, pistol shows wear. Hate to be the one to break the news to you. In my post I was referring to shooting classes and persons with questionable behavior on YT.

There are all kinds of pistol shooting classes. Some pistol classes are referred to as, Take-Away, classes. In the class you are shown how to hold onto your pistol in a fight, among other topics of course. If you intend to bring a mock pistol to a fight then bring the same mock gun to the class. These classes aren't too popular because you and the guns you bring to the class get pounded on, hard.

Spare me the nanny warnings. You won't hear anymore details about such classes from me. Come to think about it, I haven't heard about such classes for awhile. Maybe I'm one of those guys now?

Some firearms classes last all day and well into the night. Since we aren't talking baseball, we don't have rain delays or rainouts. Rain, pistols, outdoors, rust. When you shoot a lot sometimes you get blisters on your hands to the point were your hands bleed. Your hands, your pistol, rust on your pistol.

Some pistols like the 1911s and Hi Powers are known to hammer bite, hammer bite, blood, yada yada yada. AKs have lots of sharp edges, shotgun barrels get real hot, shft happens. Gloves, yea yea I know about gloves. Blood & blister juices are very corrosive and may rust gun finishes within a few hours.

On Youtube, there are plenty of guys torture testing all kinds of guns strictly for entertainment value. Dunking pistols in mud holes, running guns over with ATVs yada yada yada. And yes, I saw a popular YT guy tie a Mosin to the rear bumper of his pick-up and drag the rifle around the pasture. Stupidity really doesn't need to be repeated, again, believe me.

Normal wear on a pistol is no big deal. Should there be barbeque sauce rust on a pistol slide then that is entirely different.

Exactly.... This guy didn't even do normal maintenance on his CC gun. I don't even carry in a holster and I have never had rust on my main CC gun.

If your PLASTIC mag release is rusting, I'm thinking you have other issues of greater concern to deal with.

This reminds me of those YouTube videos of people doing home-surgery on their abscessed cysts. You see some hillbilly and his wife cutting it open and a bunch of puss flowing out.

At first you're like wow that's gotta hurt but feel so good at the same time.

Then you think, how the hell did hr let it get to this point in the first place??

This is how I feel about this video.

Shield mag release button is NOT plastic. It's MIM, and will rust. I thought it was plastic as well at first. Life got crazy and I was not as diligent as I should have been for a few days, that's how I found out. Now it's a regular maintenance item. BTW, the rust was NOT visible from outside, it was only after I took out the button I found it.
Shield non CA 9mm is what I have so I cannot say for certain ALL Shield mag release buttons are metal, but mine is.

I have a non-CA Shield from the first run made. The mag release is most definitely polymer.

Those of you dog piling about it being no big deal should look into the issues S&W has had with rust on their M&P line. Guys were getting 2 month old guns fresh out of the box with rust on them. It's pretty well documented all over the internet. One of mine was beginning to rust almost immediately.

This issue, along with many of the other issues that have plagued the M&P and Shield have left me with the opinion that they are a poorly made firearm. The only saving grace is they are somewhat ergonomic.

(Former owner of 2 M&P 9mm full size and a 9mm Shield, all with issues)

                        Great Post, MXRider.

And another example of why you shouldn't listen to just one person, especially listening to the likes of me.

I'll be danned. This is the first I've of heard of design interfering with basic maintenance. With multiple diverse assumptions about the model, I believe you're correct.

Hmm. Maybe they changed manufacturing to MIM for some reason. I always thought mine was polymer too...till it rusted. It would be interesting to find out when the change was made.

so unfortunate that s&w are going cheap on the manufacture of the m&p line... but it wouldn't be the american way if corporate and shareholders weren't trying to squeeze every penny while doing the least amount of actual work possible now would it?

and yes, i realize any metal will rust eventually and yes, i do have (several) s&w products, firearms and otherwise. every single one of their products that has been made in the last 10 or so years feel like the above.
