There seems to be a good amount of wisdom in this thread. What caliber would allow you to compete in the most competitions? Is it worth shooting 9mm in USPSA minor? Is prize money less for smaller calibers?

If you don't reload, then 9mm is the way to go. If you do reload, then 9mm is still the way to go (USPSA Production is all scored minor). There is no prize money in USPSA for any of the divisions. Start here: http://www.uspsa.org/uspsa-about-getting-started.php

But, forget all that, the most important thing is get to your nearest match, whether it's USPSA/IDPA/Steel Challenge or a local action pistol match and jump in with what you have.

I have an STI Edge .40 starting DROS...

I'd wanted an STI 2011 frame for an open gun in the future... but with SSE probably disappearing, I dunno. Not ready to plunk down a crapton more cash to get a 2011 open gun (from, say Limcat) for the future. But it might be the only way aside from PPT now ... pay now, play later.

Sounds like you're going to plan a couple weekend vacations to So Cal 14 days apart.

Run what ya brung to start with. Only recommendations I would suggest is a GOOD belt....a good holster....4+ mag pouches...and plenty of mags.

Local/club level steel shoots will get you hooked. From there you can see what folks are running and you can decide what will be best for the next step for you.

I started with a Glock 34. Sold it to someone who wanted to start shooting with us.
I then just ran my carry gun (G17)....which was great, practical, practice for me.
Then I decided if ya going to do it....do it good. Now I am using a Brazos "High Performance" Edge (STI) in 9mm. And am saving to buy another in .40.

The best thing is to just get out and get involved. I have never been to a match where everyone was not extreamly welcoming and helpful to new shooters.
