I've shot USPSA a couple times now, once with my Glock 17 and the other time with my 1911 in .45. Neither was better, just different. However, my guns are not setup for competition use, so I'm planning on buying a M&P Pro 5" in 9mm this Saturday just to compete in Production. I'll stay there for a while until I get good and then I'll look at other stuff.

For everything except unlimited, G34 or M&P Pro.
For unlimited, Dan Wesson Elite Havoc is a great place to start. Comes in 9mm or .38 Super...

Based on your recent questions, I'm assuming you are new to USPSA competition. Probably the best place to start in USPSA is Production Division.
The top 3 guns in Production Division are 1) Glock, 2) S&W, 3) CZ.
Every year at USPSA Nationals the competitors complete a survey on the equipment they are using. The survey is published in USPSA's Front Sight magazine
and is broken down by division. The trend for Production Division over the past couple of years is: The number of Glocks used is decreasing, and the number
of S&W's and CZ's is increasing, with CZ usage increasing at the fastest rate.
I believe the latest survey results were published in the March edition of Front Sight, so if you really want to know what the top guns in the Open and Limited
divisions are, get ahold of the latest survey results. I also suggest you spend time pursuing the brianenos.com forums. That's where the real USPSA guys hang out.

I do have a question though. What's the difference between the m&p 9 and pro series?Comment

I don't see why not, but it probably would not be ideal if you are looking for a strictly competition gun.
I am in the same boat as you, looking to get into competition as well. My motives may be a bit different though. I just want to be able to shoot without as many range restrictions, if I can do so and monitor my progress at the same time, I call that a win/win. I have a few handguns I could use but for the time being will be using a 4.25 M&P 9. I have made some changes that will wind up dumping me into Limited 10, but again, I am just looking to have some fun and improving. If I decide I am improving to the point where I can start being competitive with some different gear, I may go that route, but for now I am just going to shoot what I have.Comment

The most often used pistol in USPSA Open and Limited is a 1911 widebody.
2009 USPSA Nationals survey
Open
STI 199 73.16%
SV 49 18.01%
Caspian 7 2.57%
Para-Ordnance 5 1.84%
Limited
STI 139 61.50%
SV 42 18.58%
ParaUSA 15 6.64%
Caspian 2 0.88%
Glock 18 7.96%
CZ 3 1.33%
Now in Production its Glocks, S&W's and CZ's.
Glock 67 49.26%
S&W 29 21.32%
CZ 17 12.50%
Springfield 14 10.29%
Sig-Sauer 5 3.68%
But S&W's and CZ's are gaining on Glocks in the last few years.
But none of that matters compared to the fundamentals of pistol shooting: stance, grip, sight picture and trigger control are far and away more important than any magic gun or gizmos. So even if you have a $5,000 STI Open gun, you will still finish next to last in your first match.
But, forget all that, the most important thing is get to your nearest match, whether it's USPSA/IDPA/Steel Challenge or a local action pistol match and jump in with what you have.Comment

For Production Division? Absolutely!
Just be sure to consult the USPSA rule book before making any modifications to your stock gun,
or like CROB and many others, you'll find yourself out of Production class and competing against more experienced shooters.
You also might consider picking up an M&P 22, which will match your M&P 9 perfectly.... same competition holster and mag pouches,
but much cheaper for practice. And believe me, if you want to get good, it takes LOTS of practice and LOTS of ammo.

Then, after you get some experience under your belt in Production with your M&P 9 4.25 and are ready to move up and take on the 'Big Boys',
get yourself an STI 2011 frame and build up the custom Open or Limited gun of your dreams.... just the way YOU like it.
See you at the Nationals!

Good luck getting a 2011 frame in California. You can't even SSE it UNLESS your FFL is willing to build a whole gun out of it, sell it to you, then take all the parts back.
In the Free states, a 2011 frame is $300-$400. Here, you would probably have to SSE a whole gun, like an STI Edge (not a bad thing!) bu that's $2k. Fine for limited. If you want to convert it to a 9mm/.38 super Open gun ... you gotta gut it and put on 9mm/.38 super parts, which is a waste of an Edge.
I've heard there is one FFL in CA that can/will SSE frames but I don't know who it is. And I don't know if they built up an SSE gun from the frame or they have some special license or whatever.
If you are a cop, then of course, you can just buy the frame because, cops are special.==================

Remember to dial 1 before 911.
Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.
