That is not a Glock problem, or a KKM barrel problem, or a 40S&W problem. It is an idiot reloader problem. The most often used round in USPSA competition is the 40S&W. These guys are loading 25,000 to 40,000 rounds a year at thousands of matches over the world. It was not a squib, that would have bulged the barrel. Without knowing what powder and bullet weight and OAL was used and on what reloader, it is pointless to say overcharge. Kabooms are caused by overpressure, and the most common reason for that is bullet setback. Running the OAL back .100" will more than double the pressure. And despite the belief that the 40S&W is the most prone to KB's, it is actually the good old .45acp with fast powders and 230 gr bullets. At yesterdays match a shooter running major 9mm (124 gr going 1,400 fps) had a case rupture on his STI widebody. Stopped the gun from running, had to mess with the mag to get it out, and blackened his shooting hand. And this guy has been shooting competition and reloading for over 15 years.

The Glock didn't blow up any more than a gun goes off by itself. An out of battery discharge would be a gun blowing up.

Most kabooms of Glock's by reloading foul ups you see are in your friend's category, or maybe a little worse, cracked receiver down through the grip, a few blood blisters where the expanded frame closes back down on the skin, pinching it. I have seen a few broken barrels but they are the exception.

The one in the picture above is a big one.

YAY!!!! FINALLY, someone that doesn't want to tell me that I am full of s**t and that they load .40 all the time and never had any problems... and that because they never have had an issue, that it safe for everybody.

I have a tendency to actually listen to older, much more learned people what have all told me to stay the hell away from .40

Maybe they told you to stay away from reloading .40 because they felt that you personally were not competent enough to handle reloading it.
But most hand loaders, who can read and have some exsprience at reloading can reload .40 safely.
And honestly if you can't reload .40 safely. Should you really be reloading anything at all. Just go to walmart and buy some WWB.

to be clear, I am not saying that .40 can not be safely reloaded - what I am saying is that .40 is all that forgiving, especially when compared to 9 & 45.

Only when you use the fastest burning powders with the heaviest bullets. If you use medium burning rate powders with light to mid range weight bullets the pressure curve is no different than the 9mm.

I prefer to treat the .40 like a .45 ACP. I load 4grs of TiteGroup or Bullseye under a 165gr bullet. Pressure is in the low 20k range and brass lasts forever.

In regards to bullet setback I only want to say that it is not an issue if you do things right. This means using the correct size bullets, not .399" but .400", and belling the case mouth only enough to prevent bullet base shaving. It also means using equipment sensitive enough to detect case tension issues during seating.

Reloading metallic cartridges is not like screwing in screws or bottle caps. It requires knowledge of physics, common sense, and mechanical ability. Too often I see people lacking in any or all of these areas commenting on reloading forums when they have no idea what they're doing. They say a lot of incorrect and often downright stupid stuff.

Reloading is not for everyone.
