Me personally, I'd pick up the 9 first. Simply because ammunition is cheaper, and I'm sure you're going to want to get a lot of trigger time on your new pistols.

As for noteworthy trainers using XD's, Clint Smith is supposedly quite fond of the XD .45, or so he has written.

Have fun and enjoy your new pistols!

Hey, heres an important note, I have the XDS45, but the only defensive rounds that work out of it are 185g Hornady critical defense. heavier bullets dont expand at all in my testing.
You will probably havebetter luck finding and testing 9mm defense rounds as the velocity is higher right off the bat.

And my XD45 tactical has never malfunctioned. As long as you dont go crazy with the aftermarket mods you will be ok

Here is a tease. I will post more when I get back to CA, but you can tell by the pic I picked up a Bi-Tone 9mm and I shot a total of 150Rds from 3 Diff brands of ammo. I only had one FTE on the 3rd Mag but after that it ran like a champ. I cleaned it before and after with Frog Lube. She is now all packed up for her trip back to CA

Alittle update.. At the airport now and checked in my fireman and TSA looked at my case and lock setup, and told me that is was the best setup they ever seen. Will post some pics when I get back to CA tonight or 2morrow

While the 9mm is cheaper to shoot, the 45 is way more fun. Not sure why, but 9mm bores me.
