I've locked up my PPT's before.. What legitimate reason can they possibly provide you for not acquiescing to your request..? Pretty damn lame.. Find another FFL and let them know their ineptitude has cost them some revenue..

Correct. Federal law requires the handgun be released with a locking device, see Section 922(z) to 18 U.S.C.

No, you are wrong. A safe affidavit is great for buying a handgun that comes with a lock. As long as a lock is present at the time of pick up and a safe affidavit is used, no receipt is required. The Safe affidavit meets Ca's requirements and a lock (with or without a receipt) meets Federal requirements. The big problem is trying to explain this to a shop that is insisting that you buy a $5 lock from them for $25.

Josh, read my post below yours. A safe affidavit has saved me hundreds of dollars in needless locks.

So what your doing is using a Safe Affadavit to appease CA, but a regular lock to appease the feds?

If I were to not bring a lock and reciept, could I fill out affidavit during pickup and use the lock that came with gun? Or does all that need to be done before hand?
ill bring a reciept with me regardless, but just curious

Hmm, typical of people to act nice to you up until money switches hands. Was the gun really clean when you last saw it? Check it when you pick it up and you'll probably be able to tell if they took it on a joy ride. Try another FFL next time because there's no reason as to why he couldn't let you lock it. Then again, gun stores are filled with douchebags, grumpy old men, and know-it-all's who usually pass on outdated info and FUD.

I've never had a gun locked before but I usually have them store it in a soft case to prevent dings in the FFL's safe/cabinet.

Same here! And id be nervous too once he started getting shady. I dont blame u about wanting to lock it. I have never wanted to do it cause the shops I go to are ones I like and trust.

I was told by the FFL that I could not lock the case in case they receive a DOJ audit. the proj had to be able to confirm the serial numbers on the gun. This came from an FFL that does a lot of business advertising on this site.

I'm talking about when a gun comes with no lock (ppt). A safe affidavit does not work on a handgun in which a lock was not purchased in the last 30 days or no lock is provided with the gun (federal law).

The safe affidavit would work to comply with CA law. An old lock from my vast gun lock collection without a receipt complies with Federal law. So, yes, a safe affidavit will work with a PPT and a lock without a receipt.
