LOL, I told my FFL to take my ppt out on the range and give it a good workout. If it's broke I don't want to wait 10 days to find out. But I trust my FFL completely.

I did the same thing when I PPTed a COP at 10%. Since COPs are not common to say the least and, Wes had never shot one, I told him to go have fun. He declined though.

I totally get your position keilbasavw and understand why you'd want to lock it up just to be safe, I was merely pointing out the .99cent cheapo locks that come with firearms offer a false sense of security anyways.

I might be even more worried that the lock itself might scuff or scratch the finish of the applied pistol if the case were to get jostled, bumped, or just mishandled.

I always remove all other contents from the case and just leave the firearm with one mag installed for that very reason.

Go buy a $6 lock at Walmart and bring it in w/ receipt. If you have a CA approved gun lock bought within 30 days & with receipt, that can suffice for the lock they might try to force you to buy. Then, you can return it.

I have done PPT where the lock that came with the gun the FFL accepted and was fine, and some who force you to buy a new lock from them at 2x the price it really costs. So, anymore, when I PPT, I take my own Walmart lock with receipt and then return it unopened. Done that many times.

same here...safe affidavit worked for me.

On another note, when I ppt my 686-4 revolver last year; one of the guys at the counter tried to counter offer the seller; who also happened to be my friend. Douche move. When the paper work was done, I took out a 3" wide roll of blue painter's tape and completely taped up the pistol, but allowed the cylinder to open to allow inspection of the serial number and left the area where make and model uncovered also. The girl that was handling the ppt paper work asked me why? Told her I like to keep my stuff nice and the vultures over there are drooling....she laughed and told me she understood.

Safe affidavit does NOT work in CA. Your FFL is wrong for releasing the handgun using that form and will end up on the bad side of a CA DOJ audit. It only satisfies the federal long gun requirement.

Sounds like a good time to switch FFLs, I use Rob at GST (Sacramento) and I have zeo issues with stuff like that. Its great being able to trust the people you deal with, I know he won't touch my stuff until I pick it up.

As far as the receipt for the lock, why wouldn't a hand written receipt work?

I'm absolutely not worried about this with my FFL.

The FFL does have a reason to not have the gun in a locked case, because the ATF can come by any time for a surprise inspection, and they must be able to verify physical serial numbers on the gun.

If I were worried about a nice, new expensive custom handgun being monkey'd with while on ten day wait, it's a simple matter to wait until the FFL is looking the other way and taking the barrel out of the gun. No reason that has to sit in ten day jail, it is not a firearm, only the frame is.

The FFL has the responsibility to lock up the gun, he has no such obligation to lock up the magazines, barrel, or slide.

I ALWAYS put a cable lock through my guns at a PPT. Never had issues. I even went as far as removing the slide and magazines once but mostly just cable lock.

Seller wasnt very local to me and we both met halfway and I chose this one my self because it was open sunday which I should be in the area already so I can kill 2 birds with one stone and pick it up.
dont think ill be going back to this one ever. I was planning on shooting it before I left, but started getting turned off when the guy turned so rude. Figured I can wait a couple weeks and take it out to my local range that treats me well.
