Why the Shield?

It's a fad here in Cali, because the CA roster version has come out just recently. Not everyone understands SSE or has ever heard of it.

If they've ever read a gun magazine, read gun periodicals online, read this forum or other gun forums - they have definitely been exposed to the popularity of this gun.

The point is; the Shield has been a huge success. The CA version does nothing to make or break this gun. It is no more a fad in CA than it has been nationwide. It has been a well reviewed gun for two years... So the idea that it's some fad makes ZERO sense.

You need to physically pick one up and handle it rather than rely on pictures on the internet.

I tried both side by side before I made my decision. The shield is noticeably narrower and, for me, more comfortable to grip. If you are comfortable with your Glock 26 etc., so be it, but don't think that because you have seen a picture, you know all the facts.

I noticed that in photos. With larger/longer hands and owning other small frame single stack guns, double stack small frame guns fit my hand(s) better. The narrowness is not enough to be singificant. It's marginally slimmer.

Assuming I only saw separate photos of each is you not knowing all the facts. Plenty of side by side photos with pov of the back of the grips. Easy to see and know what it means if you already have plenty of similar guns. Small guns with all other dimensions near equal, double stack is the advantage.

Owning a Glock 26 and 27, I see no reason to get this fad johnny come lately. It offers nothing more than what's already available from single stack Kimbers, Springfields, Kahrs, SIGs, and others. Yep, if you don't have any of the latter or a Glock 26 or 27, I guess you can settle for the Shield. Better than nothing.

The Glock has it beat in the supply department. If I'm going small, I want ample supply. The narrow factor is not enough for me to choose the Shield over the Glock.

So far my Glock 26 is still the winner over the XDS. The G26 is the same size and holds 3 more rounds, although not as thin, but it's tough to beat that crisp Glock trigger. It will come down to carry comfort and figuring out what pluses and minuses you can live with.

Agree with that. The difference in width between the Shield and Glock 26/27 is not enough. It's nominal.

Yep. New to Cali = Fad. Not much on the roster, so what becomes available gets drools because you have to get it before it's gone. Gotta catch 'em all.

Looks are deceiving. Really measure it. It's not massively different. Fractions of an inch. I think the wider grip works better for more to hold on a small gun like this.

Yes it's been out and available to the rest of the country but here in CA it hasn't. We've all been waiting for it and it finally became available, so people are running to the stores to get them. If a Glock 18 was made available I'm sure people would be lining up for one and chatting about it.

slim is in. Glock is releasing the Glock 42 but only in 380 caliber. ss when will the thread about why not 9mm or 40?

Shot my buddies on Fri, not bad at all. If you're hands are sweating, it may be hard to hold on to for follow up shots, then again it was my first time handling/shooting it.

Having owned and carried a G26 I realized the G19 can be concealed just as easily so I would rather carry 16 rounds than 11 if I am going double stack. The grip length of the 19 disappears when canted. So I stopped comparing the Shield to a G26. The G26 is a closer comparison to the G19, but a lot of people think there is a big improvement to concealability with the 26. There isn't.

I carry my Shield every day. It is a little less clothing sensitive and I can still wear the same sized pants through my weight fluctuations.

I can only list 2 handguns on my license. So for me, the Shield and the G19 are my choices.

I dunno, I got hyped into it, as did most people. Picked my SSE'ed Shield up today. Glad I have it, if I ever get my CCQ permit it will be nice to have, but realisitically for the price, I'd probably have more fun if I bought an iPad!

NOTE: If it matters to you, the Shield comes in a cardboard box, no nice plastic case!

I dry fired mine a couple of times and every time I could see the front sight squiggle, which is not something I get even with a "heavy" gen 4 Glock trigger. But that's just me.

The thinner grip will require some adjustment to your trigger technique. I can go back and forth between my Shield and G19 without issue.

I'm not sure I'd put pocket pistols like the LC9, LCP, or Bodyguard380 into this class either since those are in a class of their own, imho.

The LC9 is no more a pocket pistol than the Shield is. The LC9's slide is slightly shorter than the Shield, but just about the same in all other rough measurements. The Ruger's melted edges do make it a bit more concealable, but it's still not a gun I'd like to walk around with in my pockets. The LCP and BG380 would certainly fit the bill though..

I agree. A beat-up but beautifully running Glock 19 is my other go-to gun, more so than my 26.
