The original grips look like this and they are worth some cash by themselves.
The -1 has a square-butt frame.... The Hogue didn't appear until after the 686 switched to a round-butt frame.
Now in truth, there are more aftermarket grips available for round-butt 686's... but I wouldn't let that stop me.

Why did SW switch from square to round butt? square looks better and especially with these wooden grips. Hogue looks cheap:-)

Even the hammer and trigger looks like were made of different steel on 686-1, it looks more brighter than the newer ones. 686P hammer and trigger steel
is black as if they forgot to finish it.

      thanks

Not sure why they switched... But most aftermarket grips for the newer 686 round-butt frame 'convert' the grip back to a full size square-butt grip (if that makes sense).
        They call them 'conversion grips.'

That's an $800 gun. Get it before someone else does.

It will also go up in value .... mark my words.

Do you think its a fair price? and the serial# is AUU09XX, when do you think it was made?

          Please advice.

I bought my no dash for $434 last year, but $500 seems reasonable to me.

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

I hope the OP bought the gun, I would have.

I bought the gun today. It's marked 'M' and some number MXXXX (may be serial) on the barrel when you swing the cylinder open, so does it mean that it was made after the recall or it was fixed by SW as part of recall?

Posting couple of pictures of the revolver.

                    Oh Yeah! Congrats!

Nice score... Great deal... Pat yourself on the back! A few more deals like that and you'll have a nice collection which will just keep appreciating in price over time.

Probably made before and sent in to S&W Service due to the recall.

Oh yeah, great deal... I assumed it would be the 6" barrel... But IMHO, the 4" barrel makes the deal even sweeter.
I had a 6" 686 and a 6" 617, they were great, but too muzzle-heavy, so I sold both to get the 4" barrels. You're starting out the right way from the get-go...

You may want to swap those original wood grips off your gun to keep them in as good of condition as possible.
That's one of the fun things about revos is you can change out the grips to fit your hand better, or just because you want to try something different.

I check out the Hogue auction every now and then for good prices on 'cosmetic seconds'. The one I got looked brand new and I couldn't find any blemishes.
They don't currently have anything listed for Round-Butt frames, but they do have several current auctions for your Square-Butt. Worth checking out.
