    SW 686-1 value

Hi Guys, I found a SW 686-1 revolver with wooden grips in consignment for $545, it has no lock and the firing pin is on the hammer. Its in very good condition.

Do you think its a fair price? and the serial# is AUU09XX, when do you think it was made?

    Please advice.

I think it's a fair price for one in very good condition, especially if they are the original wood grips.

You might check to see if it has an M on the yoke: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-rev...-1-recall.html

            S&W 686

If its in good shape, buy it now.
            I have a 686-4 (pre-lock) that I bought new in 1997 for $369.00
Your 686-1 was probably made sometime in the early 90's
They are very nice revolvers, my personal favorite.
            Good Luck

Yes, it has original SW wooden grips.
686-1 is 6 shot revolver not 7 like 686P right?

Yep... 6-shot. The 7-shot didn't show until the Dash 4

                  686 History
                  686 ''dash nothing'' - 1980
686-1, 1986 - radius stud package and floating hand
686-M - 1987 recall stamping on earlier versions
686-2, 1987, hammer nose change, bushing and ***'d parts
686-3, 1988, new yoke retention system
                  1990 - 2 1/2" barrel introduced.
686-4 ........ 1994 thru 1998 - many changes including move to 7 shot, sight changes etc.
686-5 had the move to MIM parts and frame mounted firing pin
-6 is when S&W started putting the lock on the 686; -5 and earlier are all pre-lock, and -4 and earlier are all pre-MIM hammer/trigger (-4s had a MIM thumbpiece).

The -4 list of changes says "many changes including move to 7 shot, sight changes etc."

I'm trying to decide between purchasing a 686-3 or a 686-4. From what I've been able to find, here is the history: 686 History 686 ''dash nothing'' - 1980 686-1, 1986 - radius stud package and floating hand 686-M - 1987 recall stamping on earlier versions 686-2, 1987, hammer nose change...

If it's got the original wood grips and it's in very good condition, go grab it.

And since you are a rimfire guy, start saving for a 617 .22LR 6 or 10-shot. Superb understudy to the 686. Same weight, feel, grips, accessories,
and makes a superb steel challenge or falling plates gun in-between IDPA SSR and USPSA Revolver matches with your 686!

For that price you shouldn't even think about it. Buy it!

Did 686-1 originally came with wooden grips or Hogue?

                            686-4

My 686-4 4" Bbl. has the case hardened hammer with the firing pin on the hammer, case hardened trigger, and no pin holding on the front sight.
                            6-shot cyl and no lock.
