    Purchasing A Used Firearm

Why can't I push myself to purchase a used firearm? Frankly, I can't trust the previous owner.

I carry my pistols, so I'd rather have new firearm fail on me than a used firearm fail on me.

Some of these people abuse their firearms and sell them. I just can't risk it!

It depends on a few things to buy a used gun....

How well do I know the gun and how to inspect the firearm?

Am I buying from a good dealer who will fix any issues that come up after you shoot the gun the first two- three times....

Midway has a series on inspecting S&W revolvers and how to repair them...

Modern manufactured handguns are fairly reliable... if they are in factory configuration... exception is aftermarket sights...

aftermarket triggers and other mods, I will pass....
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Do your homework first. A quality, lightly used handgun built by a quality company out of real steel and walnut will likely outlast you, your children and your great grandchildren if properly taken care of. Have it checked out by a competent gunsmith if you don't feel you can do the job and spend the $$ you've saved on ammo or reloading gear. Avoid anything that's been "customized" or looks like it's been dropped.

All my revolvers were bought used. All but one of my semiautos were bought new.

Now... buying used off teh interwebz withou being able to physically inspect... I dunno about that.

xwhatever on mods. Don't want 'em, especially kitchen table internal work. NOT a selling point for me.

I prefer pre-owned firearms. I've never understood people who think "new is better". In fact, there are many different guns that I will pay more for used than new.

I have bought plenty of used firearms. Had great experiences with mostly all of them. No problems tracing back to previous owners.

Some important reasons I prefer to buy used handguns over new (locally).

                  - PPT fee is only $35. No tax to be paid.
                  - No 30 day new gun BS to deal with.
                  - Usually broken in by previous owner. (It gets expensive to break in handguns)
                  - Save money on used vs new
                  - Sometimes extras are included with the gun. (Extra Mags, holsters, ammo, etc.)

All my guns are not Safe Queens so I really don't baby them. So new or used does not really bother me cosmetically just as long they are 100% reliable.

Not counting C&R milsurp rifles, the only used handgun I ever purchased was a Ruger Single Six 22lr/mag. Gun looked brand new, still own it. I would be a little leary of purchasing a used pistol from a LGS that also has a indoor range with rentals. God only knows how many thousands of rounds go through those rentals before they go in the counter for sale. All my other handguns I purchased new.

I would too go with used guns if there is significant saving. Unfortunately, used guns cost almost as much as new one. Sometime more than a new one.

That's why I usually skip the used guns.

If you are not knowledgeable enough to work on your own iron, it can be daunting to buy a used gun. I have bought several used guns over the years, and I do work on my own guns. Few have had any issues, and I knew what I was looking at. This is a case where being friendly with your local Gunsmith can be a very good thing.

OP are you sure? I have a East German made Sig for sale and there has only been 20 rounds through it!!

I lol @ all these sales with low round counts. BRB owned gun for 5 years and only put a couple hundred rounds through? Not likely.

I admit that nearly all the newer designs on the CA roster don't impress me in the slightest so used is, for the most part, the only girl at the dance as far as I'm concerned.
