And more fun to reload, even though you state cost of ammo isn't a factor. You could download, and put all kinds of bullets in it.
I feel completely the other way. I think the 500 is far more of a novelty than the DE. The DE is comfortable enough to shoot all day. The 500 is ridiculous. And awesome.

I'm in the market for a hand canon too. I was thinking a Desert Eagle, but the price was so much more then the Beautiful 4" S&W 500 I've kinda decided on the Smith. But I will say I'm a little town between the 460v or 500. I'll probably pick the 500. Ammo cost doesn't really matter as like you said it will mainly be a safe queen and only fired off a few times with buddies in the mountains. Plus with the 500 you get to say you own the most powerful handgun made! Dirty Harry won't have anything on you

.44 Magnum is enough for me. I have three. Reloading that and .44 Special makes one gun seem like several.

I vote Desert Eagle. But since someone mentioned the S&W .460 models, I would take that over both. The versatility of .460, .45 LC and .454 loads is pretty sweet.

50 AE ammo is very hard to find, so if you don't reload it's not just the cost.

On the other hand, you can easily convert your DE (mark XIX only) to 44M (new barrel and magazine) and 357M (new barrel, magazine and bolt). Since ammo in these calibers is not only cheap, but plentiful, it's almost a must.

                If you want to shoot Desert Eagle in 50 or 44, 500 S&W 4" or 10.5", or 460 S&W 8 3/8" or 14", let me know.

                  awesome!

also, look into the BFR JRH500.

                  p.s.
look how small the 357 S&W and ruger 44mag compare...

big bores make heads turn at the range for sure.

Yes, they are good choices for "fun guns'. Get both...
The 500 can be loaded to a "fun load" 16.1gr of American Select (or Titegroup) pushing a 335gr projectile. All the noise with a lot less punishment. The wife and I shot 100 rounds of the "fun load" last time we took the 500 out. I also have a less punishing load for the 44mag DE if you were interested.

I say if you need it go for the S&W go 460 having that versatility of shooting other calibers (45 & 454) might make it a little more fun to shoot.

Penis enlargement might be cheaper and more satisfying in the long run....

Between those you mentioned I would say the 500.
