I have both. I shoot reasonably well with both.

Based on features, function & ergonomics, I prefer the P226.

A good shooter can shoot both. The 1911 trigger is easy to shoot with. The Sig trigger takes more skill.

Like I said, I own neither so I am not a fanboy of either. Simply stating that I now understand why some people don't like Sigs. I felt that the trigger pull on the 226 was longer than a Browing Hi-Power or Glock 17. It was just a strange trigger pull and I had to use the tip of my finger to really hit it's sweet spot.

I shot a Glock 17 and a SW .357 (in DA) alongside side it and the Sig definitely had the weirdest trigger pull.

You were probably shooting a Sig DAO.

Sig's factory SA trigger is actually pretty sweet. I remember shooting one about a year ago and I was able to consistently hit a 4"x 4" piece of wood at 10 yards. I told myself I'd get one but I just ended up with more 1911s.

You could always get the reliability of sig and a SAO trigger.

            Buy a P220 SAO or a P226 SAO.

The reason I asked is because I'm very interested in the P227 or the M11-A1. I know, 45 vs 9, but that is what I'm going to have to decide before buying my first handgun. Thanks

Sigs prob have the best non 1911 triggers...install the SRT and make it even better. However it's still apples to oranges. My Sig triggers will never be in the same class as my Dan Wesson 1911's. You just have to know they're 2 different animals, you really can't compare them.

I've had 2 Sig SAO, love them...but they don't seem very popular here on CGN.

I can also vouch from Gray Guns trigger work... super crisp break & makes it a dream to shoot.

the trigger is why I got a p226 lol. To me that's the only trigger that comes near the 1911. SA of course. I hate the DA pull but im getting better.
                    Have a good day!

The SA pull of my P229 is extremely crisp. The break is not unlike my 1911 triggers. It's the Sig's takeup and reset that are vastly different from a 1911.

I have both. The 1911 trigger is unmatched in my opinion, however, I really like the P226 trigger. I haven't shot a better trigger out of the box on any non 1911 pistol. But as others have said, you are comparing apples to oranges.

I love my Sig P226, P229, and P220 SAO Elite Carry with Gray Guns... but you really should try out the Walther PPQ trigger

My Dan Wesson Valor & CCO triggers aren't in the same league as the Sigs. Love my Sigs, but the PPQ is definitely growing on me.

In defense of the Sig 226 this is an apples and oranges comparison. Two totally different actions/triggers. These two guns represent a radically different school of thought on how self defense guns should operate and be built.

Of the DA/SA handguns (my least favorite actions) the nicest I've found is the Sig 226. To the point that I begrudgingly like it. That said it is NOTHING like a quality 1911 trigger pull. No way, no how. It's just radically different. Totally different animal.

The DA/SA has two very distinct trigger pulls. One heavier, though not too heavy on the Sig 226 and one very light. Meaning you have to develop a distinct muscle memory or you end up under-pulling on the first pull - only to rush it at the very end - and over pull on the follow up shots. Pulling yourself off target. Of the DA/SA guns I've shot the Sig 226 suffers from this less so than others, but it still suffers from it by its very nature. So if you're a new shooter without already strong fundamentals it is going to take a little longer to master this gun.

The 1911 is SAO, or Single Action Only. It only has one trigger pull. The better quality the gun the lighter and crisper that is. It also usually has a very short trigger rest. Making it extremely easy to shoot well...if not a tad dangerous in the handguns of a new shooter without strong safety skills because it is so darn light but that is an argument for another time.

The Sig has a decocker that you are supposed to use every single time before you holster the weapon so the DA pull will be your fist pull as you draw. The 1911 has thumb safety that allows you to carry cocked and locked and that light SA pull is the first and only pull you get.

My point is...these could not be more different guns. Both very nice. But not really guns that offer a direct comparison as the only similarity is that they are handguns.

For my own personal preference, I would pick the 1911 over the Sig 226. But if I were required to carry a DA/SA handgun the best in bread as far as I have seen is the Sig 226. Sure as heck beats the Beretta 92 I was issued back in the day. That thing had a nightmarishly long/heavy DA pull by comparison.

In short, I would not mind if both found their way into my safe, but the 1911 (or two or three) would find it's way there first.

Like others said the 1911s have a trigger like no other. And the Sig P series have some of the best triggers out there the SA of the Sig smokes the triggers of the glock. Try one with the SRT kit then make you decision. Put a Wolf 17# Main spring and it makes the DA feel way better.
