I picked up a RIA tactical 9mm for $550 including the SSE fee about 18 months ago. They are still in a similar price range. Best bang for your buck in my opinion.

If you're going to get one RIA's 9mm 22tcm combo is hard to beat at around $530 retail (before SSE etc.).

Besides that, STI Spartan at under $700 online. Will also require SSE.

Another option - RIA 1911 in 38 Super, and a 9mm barrel. Easy swap.

+1 on a sse RIA 1911 tac in 9mm. Accurate and reliable, great gun at a good price.

I agree with these guys. I bought the RIA 1911 tactical in .45 and it's awesome. If I wasn't going for .45 I would have jumped on that 9mm 22tcm combo. My buddy has one and it's a lot of fun.

Based on my (limited) experience with 1911's < $1K....

Absolutely, a good 1911 trigger is a wonderful thing... However, save some of your budget for trigger work.
I have yet to experience a 'love-able' trigger on an out of the box, stock 1911 in your price range.
2X that for the Browning Hi Power due to it's magazine safety. Of course, YMMV.
