    SP2022 Issues

I tried out my new SP2022 9mm today and I had all sorts of problems.

Lots of FTL and FTE's, and I'm shooting plain old 115 grain standard loads. There was at least 1 per 10 rd. magazine, and the worst case was 5 of 10 rounds FTL.

Occasionally, there were times when the slide didn't lock back when the last round went off too.

Did I re-assemble the gun wrong or something? I've never seen something this extreme.

(FYI, I'm a relatively new shooter, so forgive the noobishness)

If it's new, keep shooting it. It will break in.

BTW: mine still doesn't always lock back after the last round but it fires flawlessly after it broke in

Never even heard of any issues like the with a sig, nor had any issues with my 2022 in .40. Did you try another brand of ammo durin the range session?

As for the slide not locking back, I sometimes have this happen too. But for me it is because I tend the ride my thumb on the release. Just the way I hold it.

Maybe it's inherent in the 9mm but I will say that it's a wicked accurate gun. My wife loves it

I had Winchester, Fiocchi, and Speer on it, and the Fiocchi was noticeably worse. It did get better as the night went on, but faaaaar from 'dependable.'

I'm just wondering if I'm doing anything wrong...

I would call Sig, that's ****ty. Maybe you put it back together wrong or maybe there's just something wrong with it that isn't obvious. I bought a SP2022 9mm as my first handgun last year and I've never had any issues with it in about 600 rounds so far. Never any breaking in period or anything like that. Just started pulling the trigger.

My 2022 in .40 has been almost flawless. Never had any sort of break in period with it, just load up and go. In about 2000 RDS I have only ever had the slide not lock back once and that is it.
I have never shot it with the stock guide rod though. Maybe that has something to do with it. I ordered a stainless one from guiderods.com I believe.

That is definitely NOT normal. Are you using the same magazine or does it happen with any other magazines?

Did you take it home clean it and lube it before you took it out?

The factory stuff they have on the SP2022 is pretty gummy and could cause some issues.

I have two magazines, and it's trippy with both of them. After bringing it home, I did clean it and lube it with Gunzilla only, and then kept it in a safe. It has been nearly 30 days since I cleaned it though... but still. I'll try lubing the gun better and see if it's better Fri night.

My wife had the same problems with her 9mm sp2022, when she shot it, that you're describing; failure to extract, stovepipes and slide not locking on last round. We figured out the rounds weren't ejecting because of her loose grip (i didnt have the same failures when i fired it). Seems the gun needs a firm grip so that after firing, the action can slide back using your hand as leverage. Otherwise with a limp wrist the entire gun moves backward and the slide doesn't move back all the way.

So try working on your technique of how you're holding the grip. Put the web of your hand (between your thumb and index finger), high up on the grip, then hold the gun very firmly (not to the point of shaking) you just want to limit muzzle flip. Try a firm grip and see if that helps. See if the rangemaster or another experienced shooter has the same symptoms. My wife really has to squeeze, but now doesn't have the malfunctions.

                      Good luck.

Huh. That could be it. I'll try to grip the gun more firmly.

I never had this problem with other guns, but this is the first polymer frame gun I've shot.

This is a bit disconcerting though... is the SP2022 particularly sensitive to limpwristing?

Dunno, but I shoot modified weaver thumbs forward and don't have issues with a variety of handguns.
