you would only need about 20 rounds of JHP in case of SHTF. Its called Home Defense, not go to war. but i would defintely have extra rounds to practice on.

Ever shoot any of it? Or do you let it sit in a can for ten years?

Thanks for the input guys. Well I guess I am not doing at bad as I thought. I would really just like to order a case/1000 each of 9mm and .45 defensive ammo and I think I would be happy.

I have 800 rounds of defensive .45, a mix of Hornady Z-max, Speer Gold Dots, Buffalo Bore, and Federal HST.

9mm, I've got around 600 rounds(need to work on that) Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST.

For 12g I went a little overboard, I have 1500 rounds of a mix of Federal and Winchester 00 buck(bring it zombies), and around 500 slugs.

I still need to work on 5.56, I only have 2000 rounds of XM855 and 1200 of XM193... My goal is to get to 10,000 once ammo prices drop.

I like to do most of that with less expensive bulk ball or hp's in the same weight of the intended duty ammo. Once I am satisfied with a weapon's function reliability, I'll run at least one box of duty ammo through it to make sure it feeds properly as well and repeat every time I take it out for sustainment practice [not required to qualify anymore ]

If you're referring to the age of the old Win Talon boxes, I just bought those recently from another user here on calguns primarily for novelty and the whole mixed lot was a great price.. I do have plenty of factory fresh ammo cycling through here..

I'm not an ammo snob, I'll run just about anything that's rated for my intended use and that I can maintain a regular supply of..

and btw, ten years is nothing to worry about for properly stored, sealed ammunition.. in '06 during pre-deployment weps quals, we ran pallets of '53 headstamp .50bmg [see avatar].. our ma-deuces ran it all like a swiss watch..

I'm not concerned in the least if I have duty ammo parked on the shelf for 5~10 years before it goes through a weapon.. and redardless of how many different platforms and ammo types I carry on hand in my home, rest assured, it's not all old ammo or unfired guns

That's cool, I was just poking at you about the Black Talon.

Just under 300 rds of Gold Dot 9mm and a few Glazer Safety Slugs. I would have more if I could afford it but id rather stockpile ball ammo.

So do you stay armed at all times when you're at home? Or do you live in a small enough place to only be a short distance to your SD/HD piece no matter where you are within your home?

Some of us live in residences with multiple levels spread out over a few thousand square feet. 20 rounds of JHP ain't cutting it if I'm running dozens of yards to try and get to where I have a single piece stashed.........

All of the ammo for my bedside gun is of the defensive variety. All four of the bullets I keep in my snubby are hollowpoint, I leave an empty chamber for safety, and the internetz told me that less than 3 shots are ever fired, so having one extra should be fine enough to shoot any bad people in the leg.

So yes, 4 is enough. Maybe overkill I think.
