    How much SD/HD ammo?

Just wondering how much premium defensive hollow point ammo you guys keep on hand per each caliber you have or even per handgun you have?

I am trying to get my ammo situation to the point I am happy with what I have, just wondering what you guys do as far as HD ammo.

I usually have around 100-200 HD/SD for each of the caliber.

I only have a box of HPs per each gun I would use for HD.

But I have a crap ton of ball. That's for sure. IMO if you can't get don't what you need done with a box of 50 you have bigger problems lol

Hey hey no one ever said you could have TOO much ammo right

I have maybe 200 or 250 rounds of gold dots for my 9mm handguns, but i've shot at least that much through them to make sure they function properly.

        I have 20 rounds of 75gr 5.56mm TAP, and about 250 rounds of Federal Flite-Control 00 Buck.
We in Bangor, Maine now baby.

A couple of magazine's worth in each location I have a need for it. (all properly stored, and locked per CA's requirements of course).

I would assume that two mags worth is plenty. But as other said, you need to practice with at least a box or two to ensure it runs in your gun.

I'd rather load up with factory fmj if I knew I could rely on it, rather than some pricey stuff that I'm too cheap to run through to test for reliability and don't know if it will even shoot!

I keep 200 rounds of 9mm JHP in my bug out bag. For other calibers, I stock 100 rounds each.

                You people are paranoid.

I have a double barreled shotgun loaded with two rounds of birdshot. Per Uncle Joe's advice that is all I need.

I have 500 rounds of JHP for each of my handguns. If any situation arises where ammo is suddenly restricted or not available, I would rather have too much than not enough.

500 rounds on average, 300 at a minimum of JHP in 9mm and in 40.

I shoot about 20-30 when I use it at the range for practice.

I just have 100 rounds in 40 for my glock.

I have thousands of rounds of lead and fmj in various calibers. If it ever gets to a point where I need more than 100 rounds of hallow points I would rather have quantity than quality.

I like to keep lots of the exact same ammo.

I suppose it is from years of competition shooting but, I like to keep a lot of the same manufacturing lot of the exact ammo I practice with. Your gun simply will not shoot the same with different ammo, so you don't want to use some special ammo for your most critical application, unless that is exactly what you practice with.

I would also say that if you are using a semi auto you really want to put a bunch of rounds though the gun of what you plan to use for critical applications. I have personally seen, and spoken to many other people who have also seen, that some of the personal defense ammo doesn't run reliably in their gun. Some super duper ultra high performance 40 SW ammo doesn't do you a bit of good if it jams just when you need it to work. The only way to be sure that a particular cartridge works every time is to try it many many times under many different conditions. Few people will want to spend the money to run 500 rounds of some of that crazy expensive TAP ammo.

I don't use a gun for defense but I once read an article by some really famous "expert" on such things (can't remember his name) who said, use a round nose fully jacketed round for you defense load. His reasoning was that the round nose feeds the most reliably and is inexpensive enough that you will be able to use a bunch of it in your gun to be sure it works reliably. And by the way, running a couple of magazines full of a particular cartridge through your gun is not enough to know it will work nearly 100%. You need to run hundreds of rounds to be sure. But even if you are absolutely sure the load will work you still want to know exactly where your bullet is going to go, and the only way to do that is to shoot and shoot and shoot.

Around 50-100 rounds. I shoot my HD rounds every 2-3 years and replace with fresh rounds.

I have about 2,000 rounds of HP ammunition on-hand, but I load my own ammunition, and load Hornady XTP exclusively. In fact, I don't think my 1911 has ever seen a single round of ball ammunition.
