Sholling, thanks for posting this! I for one have learned from this debate;
"I don't want to be argumentative, but you should only perform the test with either a live round or a dummy round; you want the weight of a full cartridge not an empty case. The extractor should hold the loaded round during light shaking but release it with more vigorous shaking. Only having the extractor hold an empty case is too weak of a tension setting imho and that of others much more knowledgeable on 1911's then myself; for example Bill Wilson/Wilson Combat http://blog.wilsoncombat.com/uncateg...-on-your-1911/ .
To see if you extractor tension is too light single load the 1911 via the magazine, remove the magazine and fire the pistol. Observe whether you get proper ejection or does the empty case stovepipe or drop down the magazine well. Rinse and repeat at least 5 times.
For those that might be knew to 1911's always remember extractor tension too tight=failure to feed, extractor tension too light failure to eject/stovepipe".
from Redcliff.
And I will ad (from JJ) never close a 1911 slide on a round, and eject un-fired rounds through the handle w/o the mag."Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short."---Your faithful dog

How did the whole "unreliable 1911" thing start? It started with COLT back in the early 80s before Glock (thank you UAW)---many of the older Colts from that era wouldn't feed hardball ammo---forget about JHPs! Before Glock, most people would not know about reliable pistols---back then, Colt was the only real source for 1911s---and they did a PISS-POOR job about quality control. It wasn't until Springfield Armory started importing 1911s from Brazil that you could get a quality 1911---and for less! I managed large gunstores at the time and we sent a steady stream of Colts back to the factory because they didn't work. So, when the Glock came into the picture, lots of folks didn't care for many of the features on the gun---but they WORKED well. Now everybody makes 1911s or a near 1911---the QC is much better and the pistols actually work---thus many folks still remember unreliable 1911s, but the guns rolling out of the makers are much improved in so many ways. And yeah, I know some of you guys bought a series 70 Colt that was beautiful in every way---you got lucky!!Comment

I agree, a break period should not be needed for a well built 1911. I have owned a Sig 1911 and 6 different newer production(2007-2012) Colts and I have not had a single issue with any of them. They have anything from 500-5000 rounds through them and they are still reliable. The sad thing is that I started this thread with the intension to educate new 1911 owners to accept no excuses from their pistol maker for reliability issues. To show them that there is no-zip-zero excuse for their new pistol to be anything but dead-bang accurate and 100% reliable from the first day and no excuse for the manufacturer to demand that they shoot 500 "break-in" rounds before fixing manufacturing mistakes. But for some reason it turned into a Glock vs 1911 thread, plus a strange accuracy peeing contest.
The bottom line is what Hilton said, that there is no good reason why you should not be able to take your new 1911 out of the box, clean off the shipping preservative, lightly lube it and then use the heck out of it without any issues, and if you can't then it means that the manufacturer shipped a not quite completed pistol and should finish the job that they started.Originally posted by barrageThat's because Excelsior threads are like toilet bowls. - I own 3 Colt 1911s - a fullsize blued series 70, a fullsize stainless Series 80, and a 1991A1 stainless
compact (3.5" Officers ACP variant)
. - All my Colts operate 100% with a variety of quality factory ammo. All my mags are factory Colt.
. - Quality mags are #1 1st-point fix if issues. ChipMcCormick mags of early 2000 vintage failed to feed
last round properly and/or hold open slide on last round. Got a refund. Never tried a non-Colt mag
since (though I'd be glad to try their true OEM equivalents from, what is it, MecGar? MetalForm?)
. - Those ~$10 gunshow true USGI mags in crusty phosphated finish with USGI NSN numbers on them
wrapped in that special anti-rust paper work very well also. I'm gonna pick some up at the Big Reno
gunshow.
. - I never hear of S&W 1911s *EVER* having an issue - from users *or* FFLs. However, many FFLs
have told me, by contrast, of lots of issues (eventually resolved/resolvable) requiring returns of
Kimbers to the factory.
Many Springfields & Sig 1991s seem to benefit by throwing out their factory mags and using Colt mags
per above.
. - I will gladly buy 'problem-child' Sig GSRs/Sig 1911s from you for $300/ea all day long.

1911 Reliability: Myths vs Facts
OK. I don't own any high end 1911 so I am going to apply physic and just raise a question.
High end 1911's are hand fitted to the keep the tolerance as tight as possible. Assuming that all parts are machined from the same block of metal to keep the thermal expansion property consistent. But even that, thermal expansion properties from each parts (frame, slide, barrel, bushing...) will slightly vary. Basically, different parts from the gun expand differently when they are HOT. Therefore, hand-fitting the parts in ambient (room) temperature is not enough. Ideally, the gun need to be hand-fitted when the parts are hot. Well, one way of achieving this "hand fitting" when hot is shoot it a lot. Is this what some companies call break-in period?Last edited by tbc; 08-11-2013, 6:56 AM.Comment

Good shooting! Dang, they put no shoots behind the plate rack?!Can't we all just get along?
Contrary to popular belief, Glocks and 1911s can co-exist in the same safe.
I shoot a Springfield Loaded in Single Stack and Glock 17 in Production and the world has not come to an end, yet..... and no that is not a malfunction in the Glock video, I was riding the slide stop with my thumb so the slide didn't lock back on the last shot.
My 1911 also shares it's safe with 3 Glocks. I like them all.==================

Okay, I have not read trough the whole thread, and it may yet be revealed. What I find funny is...
You both have a similar join date....
Both have feminine SNs......
Both asked the same question in almost the same manner.......
And both have quite a few almost dupe posts in at least 3 to 5 of the same threads in around the same time frame...........
You both have quite a lot in common.....
Which 1911 do you own?LIVE FREE OR DIE!
