What's the deal with the term "clips"?

I use mag more often but I have been know to say clip when talking. I think it has to do with my mind going 50x faster than my mouth and then oops there it went off the tongue "clip". you cant retract it once its said so you just go with it. I've caught s#^+ on here for it also. Asking how I got a rifle on my ccw. I just take it in stride.

I worked with a guy who called magazines "clips."
He also ordered Grilled "Prongs" for lunch at a local seafood restaurant.

They did the same in FarCry, calling ammo drums/belt on machineguns as "Large clips". Also called a M14 as an Assault Rifle.
