What's the deal with the term "clips"?

Why is this such a bad term, everytime I hear someone say clips, they get called out on it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Because 90% of the time people use that word when referring to a modern firearm, they have no idea what a clip actually is.

I've always viewed it as colloquial...much like gat or shotty.

I don't care enough to correct people on it, but the reason some get annoyed by it is that people frequently use it to refer to something that is not, in fact, a clip.

Tangentially, what DOES bother me is the way many people in the South use "Coke" to mean all soda/pop beverages.

CK_32 is correct, let it go. Some people got nothing better to do. Besides clips were used in years past. Now they are for hair

People use "clip" and "magazine" interchangeably. They are completely different, and some other people have a major meltdown because of it.

No biggie, I know what they mean.

What I do chuckle at tho is when I talk to my uncles or some people hear my gun conversations about me getting or owning a glock. Their face acts like its the best gun in the world. A one shot killer. Always followed by "duuudee you got a glock?! Those are good guns"

Why it's such a big deal to some people...

Let's ask the obvious questions first.

Do you learn from Hollywood or did you go to school for your education?

Does it bother you when people use the wrong usage of terms like their, there or they're? What about switching brake and break? Or the proper use of to, too or two?

Do you ask or axe questions?

So if these terms do not bother you then you probably don't care if someone refers to a magazine as a clip.

I try my best to be polite when correcting someone in proper use of a term like this and only say...

Clips feed magazines, magazines feed guns. That's the difference between a clip and a magazine.

I think when you have a discipline that's as "dangerous" as firearms/shooting, the goal is to attain a certain level of knowledge, and then grow from there. Nobody want's to be a "dumb" gun owner. Let's admit it. Everyone wants to flaunt how much they know.

So you've got basics you need to learn like the Five Weapon Safety Rules. And when it comes to terminology you should really know the parts of a gun (IMHO).

I feel like when someone uses the word "clip" they either:
                            1. Honestly don't know the difference.... OR....
                            2. Are too lazy (and accustomed) to calling it a Clip instead of a Magazine.

Either way - they are demonstrating one of those two characteristics so there is an opportunity for someone to correct them. And in doing so the corrector indirectly demonstrates either :
                            1. A higher level or knowledge (as it pertains to 'parts of a gun')... OR...
                            2. Shows they are not as lazy.

It's like saying "Hey, I schooled you."

And then of course there are those that know the difference and don't give a F*ck what people think.
