Reloading p226 with slide locked open

When I load my gun with the slide locked open my slide sometimes shuts and loads the chamber without me yanking on the slide. It only happens with my Mer-Gar magazines when they're full. Never happens with the factory mags or when there's no ammo in the magazine. Also I can consistently do it when I tilt the gun up.

When I'm at the range I like to do reloading exercises. Is this a technique I should practice or is something wrong with my p226? I'm taking a class tonight, I'll ask my instructor and make an update.

    Here are some videos.

    Here are some pictures.

    -update
I asked about this last Sunday at my class and it's a feature of the gun and isn't going to ruin the slide release. They did tell me not to use the slide release because that's a fine motor skill that you will not be able to do when your adrenaline is pumping.

    -update
I called Sig and they said it's not going to wear out and if it did and the slide stopped catching they would fix it under warranty. The factory magazines don't have the "auto-forward" feature.

Sounds like a mag or slide lock problem. Can u take pics of your slide lock and mag?

How are you holding the gun? Could you be accidentally touching the slide release when you slam the mag home?

My m&p45 does this also. When the magazine is loaded easy it stays locked back. During fast reloads the magazine goes in a little harder and the slide drops, loading a round in the chamber. I have heard conflicting reports on if this is normal or a malfunction. Regardless, I like it and have no intentions of changing it.

I've heard of USPs doing this as well, but I've never seen a Sig do that. Are you placing your thumb on top of the slide release? If so, you could actuate the lever when you slam the mag in.

I also have had this happen on my M&P 40, but I really have to slam the magazine in hard for it to occur. I have a 226 and haven't noticed any problem with it.

This happens occasionally with every M9 I've ever fired, but I've never been able to reliably duplicate it. I imagine it's nothing more serious than us jarring the gun enough during a quick reload to disengage the slide lock.

This is 'normal'. On certain guns (e.g M9) you can make the slide go forward by inserting the magazine with deliberate force if the gun is at an angle. I think 45 degrees to the ground is about the correct angle on the gun when inserting a magazine will result in the slide going forward.

You are using WAYYYYY too much force when inserting the mag. just push it in there until the mag catch engages. There is NO need EVER to be Rambo when changing mags.

What is happening is the force from you inserting the mag is hitting the slide catch and causing the catch to move, thus releasing the slide.

I'm not giving it much force in this video

true, but you are still slamming it in there. all you have to do is just push it up into the magwell till it seats.

It's not a "feature". You are using too much force to put the mag in period. That force is being transferred to the slide stop releasing the slide.

But what do I know, I only own 14 Sigs and have been shooting them for almost 18 years now...
