I mistakenly picked up a couple of boxes of Hornady 9mm Critical Duty ammo thinking it was the same as their Critical Defense and realized it's +P. I have an M&P 40c with a factory 9mm barrel. I read the manual and it doesn't say you can't shoot +P but they imply that it's not good for the gun. Any one shoot +P in their M&P?

9mm +P ammo

If you carry it as self defense ammo, shooting only enough in the gun to confirm absolute reliability and determine accuracy you are fine. I would not shoot a regular diet of +P ammo in the gun for target shooting/training. I have no doubt the S&W M&P will have no problem with the ammo. A shooting bud is mine is a Lt. with the LA county sheriff's department told me that the M&P is the departments new standard issue gun. Critical Duty ammo will be right at home in the M&P.Last edited by Ronin2; 05-22-2013, 12:24 AM. -

Smiths M&P Safety & instruction manual on page 11 states ( 'Plus-P" ammunition generates pressures in excess of the pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures may affect wear characteristics or exceed the margin of safety. Use of "Plus-P" ammunition may result in the need for more frequent service.
"Plus-p-Plus"(+P+) must not be used in Smith & Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates that it exceeds established industry standards, but the designation does not represent defined pressure limits and therefore such ammunition may vary significantly as to the pressures generated and could be DANGEROUS.
Just says it may wear the pistol fasterComment

Well no one should ever suggest you shoot something that your manual suggests you not to shoot for liability reasons. I am not an expert and read this at your own risk and take from this what you may but M&P are "military and police" guns. Generally designed to shoot self defense pistol ammo. Self defense pistol ammo manufacturers generally like to produce +P self defense ammo. You do the math. I'm not going to say it's safe but let's just say that people wouldn't be buying +p ammo to defend their life with if it was breaking their guns or making it unreliable. I personally would prefer +p self defense ammo and that's the reason I only have +p self defense ammo.

Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

What bullet weight? Want to sell it or trade for some Federal HST non +P? I my SiG's and Browning HP's eat that stuff up...I mistakenly picked up a couple of boxes of Hornady 9mm Critical Duty ammo thinking it was the same as their Critical Defense and realized it's +P. Send it to me, I'll run it through my Sig and tell you how it worked.
Seroiusly it shouldn't hurt to run 50 rounds through your M&P. I think almost every pistol owners manual has a note about +p. I have a box of Winchester Ranger FMJ NATO that I'm told is the equal to +p and I have a box of the Hornady +p same as you. My Sig 226 is OK with +p and the M&P shouldn't have a problem either. I'm sure you can find somebody that would be happy to make a straight across trade withstandard 9mm ammo for your +p, I would if I were in SoCal.
BTW the +p brings a 9mm up to the level S&W 40 for stopping power.I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...
