I also bet that another smith could redo the checkering without an insert and you would probably never know the difference. Since it is so fine it isnt very deep, if it was 20lpi then probably not but with 30lpi it seems at least possible. Surprised the guy who did it didnt do that in the first place.

I compared it to my 20 LPI Springfield TRP and the TRP strap is still way thicker. I sent a pictures to Alan Tanaka, Springfield Custom Shop, and Jim Milks at Innovative Guns and they all said the strap is too thin and must be cut and welded with a checkered insert. Jim Milks (former EGW smith) was recomended by Springfield Armory and 10-8 performance so I think I'm gonna have him fix it. While its there I'm gonna have a bunch of other stuff done along with a Melonite finish and new trigger, all things that I wanted done eventually. It kind of works out because I'm unhappy with the grip from 30 LPI, I should have stuck with 20 LPI like my TRP. I'm still going to pursue some sort of compensation but if it's not offered, I'm going to chalk it up as a bump in the road and a expensive lesson in life as I'm not the type to sue or make a scene. The gunsmith should pay for repairs at the shop of your choice. It is also appropriate that he should offer and do this quickly and with a good attitude.
If you fudged something, say you are sorry and willing to make it right. That is the honest and american way of doing business.

Nope. I'd never hand back work like that, honesty is the most important thing in my life and work. But I realize that's not true for everyone.

If it were me (and I'm not you), I would call the smith, point it out and ask for a refund of some reasonable amount (adding up to a 10% discount on the work of something)... and then I'd forget about it.

There is no way I'd pay more money to fix something as small as that. Sure it might affect resale value, but I've never actually sold a gun nor plan to.

yeah, it would bug me if I didn't get some money back because OP paid full price for a proper job. But if I could get the apology money, I'd just forget about it.

But that's me. Life is too short to stress over stuff like that.
If he refuses the discount/rebate for the bad job, then by all means tell us who he is. Why would you protect an unreasonable smith and screw us over by not telling us so that WE will pay for possibly bad work.

Let's face it, he KNEW he screwed it up, so he tried to pull one over your eyes. If he DIDN'T know, then he's just a bad smith for not noticing.

ouch, yeah i agree with everyone, go back, and tell them he made a mistake and complain. Hopefully he compensates or fixes the problem for you.
