    how does a da/sa pistol work w/o a decocker?

I've owned only sa 1911s, now I'm getting a cz. The cz is da/sa, but only has a safety. So how would I transition between sa and da? I read that the first shot is da, but from videos the hammer is cocked on the first rnd.

To use the DA feature of the CZ-75 you have to manually decock the hammer. The gun was designed by engineers who assumed that the person using the gun was not a klutz and could do this without injuring himself or others.

Also if the ammo FTF, you can just pull the trigger again instead of cycling the round.

This wasn't on the Handgun Safety test

I've never tried to manually decock a live round w/o decocker. Seems dangerous.

I'm not sure on your question but here's my 2 cents...

The classic example is the 1911 (as you should know since you own one).. SA only. You holster the gun in SA mode with the hammer cocked and the safety on. Draw the gun and by the time you have it on target you train yourself to kick the safety off but keep you finger off the trigger until the last second.

DA/SA on some guns (depends on the make/model) has a safety/decock. If it's cocked back in SA mode the safety will not allow you to pull the trigger until you hit the safety. If it's in DA mode sometimes the safety on will not allow you to do DA pull. If it's in SA mode the safety lever pushed further will decock the hammer in a safe manner (some models - not sure on which ones)

At the range it's not a big deal but in training it's a huge deal to kick the safety on-off/decock and remember what to do if you're life depends on it.. all while drawing from a holster...

Every gun, no matter what make or model will have it's 'quirks' on the safety/decock thing... you need to ask yourself if it's a range gun or a training gun (hoslter, tactical class use)... You'll find yourself surprised on the end results.

All my current HD's have no safety levers (well, my Sigs have the decock lever)... can't deal with the whole safe on/safe off/deock? thing.. YMMV.

SA 1911's are like this- normal. Safe off, hold hammer back with right thumb (right handed), press trigger, slowly allow hammer to go forward. Every gun make and model has it's quirks. It's up to the user to determine if it fits them. Prob why I would never use a 1911 for defense reasons but LOVE to shoot them at the range.

I shoot my Sigs and revolvers at the range (until I get better with the DA on the SIGs)

I use my XD for range practice and class/home use.

Every tool's got a purpose. Once you are confortable with your HG on the range take it to a class and you might be suprised that you either love it, can deal with, or hate it... yea it sucks and funny at the same time.

One reason I'm thinking of selling my SigP226R 9mm to my buddy. I can't shoot the thing in a home defense situation at all but can shoot it at the range with great results.

You don't get to pick the gun......... it picks you. After all these years now I get it.

            And..... with your original post...

The videos you are watching probably has the guy lazy and has the first round in SA (or he just dumped the magazine, but a new one in and released the slide - so the hammer will be cocked at that point). If you were to carry a DA/SA gun this would not be true (depending on the gun). It would be drawned from the hoslter hammer down and in DA mode for the first shot. Most videos show the gun in SA mode cause they are terrible DA shooters and already have the gun 'staged' to shoot well in SA mode. If you wanted to transition from SA to DA without the decock you would do it like the 1911 as I said above. Hope that helps.

I'm not a CZ expert at all so the CZ action is unknown to me... but you get the idea... I think the HK UPS is even crazier, you can have it in SA mode and have the safe on so it will not fire (hammer cocked). But with my hands I kept putting the safe/decock lever all over the place and I cound't get the idea of it so I didn't buy it. Depending on the traning class you'll take later they request you know how to use the safety/decock lever at all times and that just messed my head.

Manually de-cocking a CZ is not as dangerous as it could be.
Practicing with a snap-cap can help you get the hang of it. With the safety off,
put your thumb on the hammer, slowly pull the trigger, you will notice the hammer moving a little, but release the trigger completely before you lower the hammer- it will stop in DA. Put the safety on and holster.
If you remember that your thumb, pride and perhaps foot are all at risk in this process, then you will give it the due attention it requires.

Very carefully. As said u have to manually pull trigger and lower hammer with thumb. Best to do this unloaded. Or keep it cocked and locked!

CZ's if decocked into DA, will not allow the manual safety to be engaged. At least this is the case with a CZ97b and CZ75 Compact.

It's not hard to decock a cz manually. Also you can lower it to half cock which makes it even easier. I grab the hammer with my middle finger and thumb and keep my index finger in front of the hammer. Firing the gun at half cock also makes the trigger pull a little lighter and shorter.

De-cockers have and do fail resulting in a nd and too many shooters are lax in being as safe as possible when decocking.
Be very careful using a decocker a CZ52...

As if you were racking overhand, stick your thumb between hammer and frame, pull trigger, release trigger, remove thumb. Unless you have an original 75 model, the hammer will not fall to engage the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. Quite easy.

Put the safety on and holster.
Unless you have had modifications done, CZ safeties don't operate in DA.

No kidding. People have been lowering hammers on live rounds for well over a hundred years now.
