why not just get it from a local dealer? tax cant be that much more than shipping on that gun. and a $25 dros vs. $75 transfer?

My experience has been that new out of State purchases, usually aren't worth it. Of course there will always be an exception, but the majority of the time, after you pay for shipping+FFL+DROS it usually is around the same amount it would have been if you just bought it, from the local FFL.

For an inexpensive item like a Ruger 22, what are you saving? Then you also add in the extra time for them shipping it to your FFL.

Well Locally they want $500.00 for the Pistol
Plus 8% tax, thats another $40.00, plus 25.00 Dros
          Total $565.00
Off the net I can get it for $437.00, plus $25.00 DROS and no tax and no shipping. Thats $452.00
          Thats $113.00 Cheaper
But like you say if the Dealer here charges me $75.00, it is hardly worth it.

When importing you always have to factor in FFL, it's part of the cost.

Not every FFL charges that much for a transfer fee (Though you're right in that the 'transfer cost' varies from FFL to FFL). The guy I go to in Sac charges $25 + $25 dros (sent PM to OP already) . That's it, regardless of whatever you purchased and had sent to him. Whatever you paid onine is your biz, he's not looking for a cut. He's packed all day long. Hint, hint for other FFL's.

He doesn't ask what you paid for it. The only tax I see on my reciept is for the transfer itself.

No he meant, buy it in State. California needs the money not Fedex.

                        Ah. I see

Sorry. No disrespect intended. People go to gun stores to buy guns, accessories, and ammo. If more FFL’s would simply provide the transfer cheaply, they'd get more business in other areas. It's a mind set they are resistant to embracing. Often the things I buy aren't found at most stores because they never stocked (high end engraved Browning’s for instance). Anyone can find it cheaper online, and everyone would leave buying some other accessory, or something else because they didn't get stiffed (over charged), or hassled.

buy locally..., if you have any issues with the gun, you can always go back to the people that sold it to you... otherwise you're on your own dealing with Rugar... cheap shouldn't be the only reason you don't buy in state...

Generally I'd send my stuff to the factory anyway, or go through my local gunsmith. But I do agree with your sentiment. Aren't I still supporting the local business anyway? An FFL is still getting $25 for the transfer fee. As the FFL I know does no less than 10-20 dros/day, let's just see his rough figures. I'll say $10/day @ $25 each. $250/day or $1250/week, or $5,000/month. And that's in a bad month. Being a small operation, my 'go to' guy, probably doesn't worry too much on his overhead just doing transfers alone. I've never seen him with less than 5 people in his place, and I'm never there for more than 1/2 hour. A regular store that followed the '1st go to place' philosophy that also sold ammo, and other accessories could follow the same model, have an ever increasing loyal customer base, and do well I imagine.

Imagine if one vender here sold lowers at cost. Its a lost leader for his shop, but everyone would buy other things balancing it out. And more importantly, build a customer base long term.

CA wants its taxes to be sure, however this state doesn't respect my rights. Its my small way of civil disobedience.
You're right, I should feel guilty and send the state a check since they will spend it so wisely.
