Glock 17 or XD .45?

I have a chance to by either a Glock 17 or XD .45 for about the same price. This will be my second pistol, I shot a .22 Ruger for awhile now. I know that these are two different calibers, so it is like apples and oranges, but if you were buying your first REAL pistol, which would you choose? I will be using it mainly at the range, with some IDPA and USPA later, but will be loading it with HD rounds and using it as a nightstand gun too.

my first handgun was a glock 17, never a problem, fantastic gun. price difference between rounds is about $10 per 100 or somewhere around there, for WWB. shoot them both. see what you like better.

I would normally always say go with the 45 but in this case since it will be your first I would say go with the 9mm. You can get more bang for your buck with the 9mm and when you get comfortable with that you can then go for the Big Dog G21!!

Both are great guns, but on ammo cost alone, I'd have to say Glock.

For your 2nd pistol and the fact you like the Glock platform, I'd opt for the G17

The G17 is a very versatile pistol, shoots 9mm which is much cheaper than .45, and well.. everyone needs a G17. It pretty much sets the standard for reliability and durability. The gun is very moddable with a whole slew of aftermarket parts.

Also, since this will be your 2nd pistol it'll help against learning bad habits such as anticipating the recoil, and flinching.

Gotta go try them out and find the one that feels better in your hands, and that you bond with. It really is a personal decision. Quality wise, you can't go wrong with either.

As for calibers, that's a personal choice, me I would prefer a .45, grew up shooting .45, and I just personally like the caliber more than a 9mm. As for the price difference? That's up to you, to me it doesn't make a difference, but to others it seems to be a big factor.

If you're thinking of getting into IPDA or IPSC, the Glock 17.

You'll have cheaper ammo and there's no bonus for shooting the big bullets in Production. If you're moving out of Production, then there's a lot more aftermarket stuff for the Glock and you 'can' load up to major power factor in 9mm if you wanna get into open class.

To me...this is a no-brainer. The G17, and specifically the 9mm platform, is a much better target shooting gun. Have you seen the latest prices of ammo? Walmart has 100 rd WWB in 9mm for $18+ and .45 for $28+.

I'm sure the XD's are good pistols. I just don't own any. I do have a slew of Glocks and absolutely love them.

Really depends which one you're comfortable shooting with, however along with ammo prices, the G17 edges out the XD a bit when it comes to accessories and aftermarket parts. There's even .22lr conversions for the G17.

G17 generally cost more, I however like the feel of XDs better, especially in .45. Given the cost of ammo, get the G17. That way when you tell uninformed people what you own, you don't have to say, "I own a Springfield marketed, Croatian made gun, that is kind of like a Glock, but with Sig sights, a 1911 grip angle and a grip safety." You will only have to say "I own a Glock" and that will be all you need to say.

but for myself, I'd ditch the Glock 9mm for my XD45 since it's just more fun to shoot.

Whichever you like better. It's really a personal decision. Both are fine products. Ideally, rent both at a public range and see which one you shoot best with. One will probably fit your hand better than the other or will just "feel right." If you can't try both at a range, at least go to your local store and handle both to feel the grip and balance. I like glocks, mostly because the grip angle feels very natural to me, but also because they seem to shoot better for me than any other platform.

If you try both and still can't decide, then I'd say get the glock, as it will probably be ever-so-slightly more reliable, and ammo will be cheaper.

i have a glock 17 if i had to do it today i probably would have gone with the xd

because stores can only sell 10 round mags you might as well have 10 big bullets

i like 17 shots per reload better but i bought long ago

Well, the magazine capacity thing is more if you're very concerned about home defense or are shooting in limited or open divisions.

If you want a firearm for gaming or the range, then 9mm is fine and the 45 is okay (each has it's place).

If you want a firearm for HD, then I would prefer the 45. Like it's been said, more hole makers and bigger holes.
