The "50 caliber myth" is that anything that is 50 caliber is regulated - it's not. CA has a registration/ban only on 50 BMG which is a very specific cartridge (there are some additional details about being "shoulder fired," etc.). 50 DTC is good to go, as well as 500 S&W and 50 AE.
Above 50 caliber you start running into "destructive device (DD)" territory where the devil is in the detail. For example, 12 gauge is over .70 caliber, yet it's not a DD.
