    Weaver or Isosceles?

    Hello fellow Calgunners!

I'm so used to shooting my black rifles in the "modular blade style" weaver stance. But now with all this $H!T going on, I just been shooting my handguns now.

I know most all the pro's are shooting isosceles stances, and I'm trying to convert but I keep finding myself naturally going back to weaver. I kinda' have the right bicep as my cheekrest (somewhat, but not totally on my bicep).

So my question is do you shoot isosceles or weaver?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sffred

Use whatever stance works for you...
    I use modified isosceles stand.

Its not about what the pros use, or what we use, but since you asked I find that weaver is comfortable if i am standing stationary and be as accurate as possible. My stance changes during competitions, i am basically a modified iso. I find this position allows me to shoot faster ( faster target acquisition, faster reloads, faster movement), so this is what i train with and what i would use in a defensive scenario. My stance allows me to hold a rifle and a pistol with the same upper body position and posture, keeping things more or less the same between different weapons.

Try out a local match and see how you shoot, change and develop your method, the great thing about shooting is you can always improve. Good luck!

Which "pro's" are you referring to?

Whatever gets you ACCURATELY putting rounds on target in a combat scenario can be argued is what's best for you regardless of what it is.

That said, I use a "modified weaver" "fighters/boxers" stance. I use the same stance regardless of the weapons system employed...handgun, carbine, shotgun (with more upper body forward lean), knife, hands/CQB, baton etc... Same basic stance, same basic muscle memory when you go from condition white to condition red.

My opinion regarding the traditional /formal isosceles stance:

Isosceles is a target stance not a combat stance. Fine in a static square range environment but way to exposed, stiff and inflexible for a gunfight.

It has poor balance characteristics; you are very susceptible to fore/aft loss of balance if taking a round or strike from a threat. While offering great side to side stability, one would assume you are going to be facing the threat. The more 360 degree stability of weaver/modified weaver combat stance is IMHO more desirable in combat.

It has poor movement capabilities as it is an unnatural position to walk forward or back in, causing excessive side to side movement/swaying. The Weaver or a modified weaver/combat stance offers immediate step drag movement which is a reasonably stable way to advance or withdraw as needed. Additionally, it is much harder to take a knee from isosceles versus the modified weaver should you need to (weapons malfunction and no immediate cover available).

The locking of ones arms in the isosceles stance precludes the use of isometric tension to stabilize the weapon for follow up/ multiple shots. As a result, isosceles shooters are more likely to be breaking their wrists and or having FTF issues.

A formal isosceles stance has you offering maximum area of your body exposed to return fire.

The only time IMHO that the isosceles stance is acceptable when shooting a pistol is when you are in "full kit" with rifle plates etc... And you are physically unable to blade yourself into a combat stance (modified weaver) because of the bulk of all your gear. The protection offered by the rife plates in this situation offsets some of the negatives of the stance they force you to be in.

Not a stance video per se but after modifying my shooting technique to adopt the strategies in this video, my accuracy has improved tremendously.

Previously, I had always kept my arms super stiff and locked and shoulders down i had seen that in a pro shooters video.

I guess it would be called a modified isosceles,

Practice all the shooting stances. Different stances for different situations. Practice to the point where you're getting good shot placement from any stance....GunFu!
