I'll go against the grain here....

If you are not going to be carrying this pistol, get a light. Mount it and get used to shooting it with the light. A good HD pistol will have a light.

Carrying the gun while you diaper the baby when it isn't pitch black. Unless you have night sights, if you put it down on the hamper it is hard to find.

Regardless of the OPs intended purpose He should get a holster. If you go camping or hiking and want to take the gun you need a holster.

Handheld lights are better for home defence so you are not pointing your gun at a unintended target. Weapon mounted lights are for when you know what your target is.

In the end you should have the holster, light, spear magazines, defensive ammo, practice ammo, and a cleaning kit for your new pistol.

The OP hasn't answered me yet, but if he doesn't have a CCW or any plans to shoot USPSA/IDPA (I figure he would have chosen 9 or 40 for that), you guys still think he NEEDS a good holster? If we're talking about how the extra money could be spent on stuff other than the 2 options he gave, I'd say buy ammo or get some professional instruction.

I have no plans for CCW as I am actively seeking a career in law enforcement. I have plenty of ammo left over from my previous .45. More instruction wouldn't hurt.

I'd personally get the light first. If you end up getting a holster first, then make sure it will accomodate your gun with a light attached to it.

I meant CCW as a citizen. I am still torn. Blackhawk serpa holsters look nice. Tlr-1 do too. I am still torn.

A good holster is also going to need a good belt to support everything.... more $$$ to spend.

And then why stop there, as you might as well get some mag pouches to go with the holster.

For nightstand and range, get a light first then get a holster.

Between the two choices, and given your intended usage, I too would recommend getting a light first. For me personally, I prefer a handheld high quality light over a weapon mounted one. Surefire E2D is a fantastic, bright, rugged tactical self defense light. Take a low light handgun class and learn how to properly utilize the two together eventually. (you'll need a light, holster, and mag pouches for the class though )
