    Residency help

I've looked and found some conflicting information, and spoken to now a few shops who have all given me very conflicting info. So, the question is, what exactly is needed to purchase a handgun in CA re: residency?

I recently moved (4 months ago). My CA DL has my old address on it. I have gone to the DMV and have a the little brown card with my correct address that will match the paperwork. I have a signed lease for my current residence. I do not have any other utility's or government issued paperwork with my current address on it because I am renting a room from the landlord - so all utilities are in his name.

I do have divorce paperwork filed with the court with my current address listed. I have bank, credit card, student loan, bay area toll bills, Bart (clipper) card, etc. all with my new address. I was told that I am fine for the ATF, but CA DOJ needs more, but I don't know how to get what is needed. Frankly, this is a bit ridiculous. I have gone through a much more extensive background check to be an attorney, and I've been a resident of California my entire life. Why it matters that I've moved from Contra Costa to Alameda County is really irrelevant I would imagine.

I'm hoping that the Court paperwork is enough. Oh - I've also updated my voting registration, but of course, you can't get proof of that until prior to the election and they send out the card. So yeah - any advice?

CA Car registration matching DL as far as address is what is required of late...there was a change sometime ago calling this out.

Used to be lease, 3 months bank statements...utilities bills etc.

Unfortunately, car registration won't work for me. The car is registered to my wife (soon to be ex) and I jointly and thus, because of the California restrictions on transferring of property and insurance during a pending divorce, until we get a court order that allows us to change the insurance, we can't handle the issue of the vehicle ownership - hence, there's no way to change the address on the registration..

Well, maybe I can just change it with her name still on it - it's going to be my car anyway, so we've already agreed that she would sign it over to me. Maybe I can get her to do it now but the insurance stays the same until after we get a court order. Anyway, for the short term the car registration route is out.

Maybe a fishing license for christ sakes... I was really hoping that I could get a printout of the voter registration, because that's under penalty of perjury and a government document.

Fishing license is a no-go. Not issued by a government agency. You can get them in a sporting good store; so won't fit the bill.

Do you have any government issued license with your address and an expiration date? Amateur Radio License? Guard License? Who issues your CAL BAR card? Does it have an address and expiration date?

Your CA Reg is not a problem w both names on it.... I just used a registration w three names on it w no issues!

You need to educate your FFL....nicely of course!

If your current license and car registration have the same address...you are good to go....

My license and registration match - but that's not the address that I presently reside at. That's the problem I thought.

You're an attorney, and you can't figure this out?

CDL and Registration doesn't need to match. Registration needs to have correct address on it.
                Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

I'm in the same boat. I haven't tried purchasing a handgun as of late due to the change of car registration address. Keeping old cdl address for daughters schooling.
Thanks to everyone's info looks like I can go purchase a handgun once more.

CA DOJ's guidance on proof of residency for firearms purchase.

I have a signed lease for my current residence
Sounds like you're good to go.

The little brown card does nothing. If your registration matches your current address you're good to go.

I was able to buy mine with a lease agreement. They gave me a generic one at the store to use but if you have one already done then it should be fine.

This is exactly what I was looking for and needed because what I was told by the FFL was precisely the opposite - he way saying that a lease wasn't good enough because it wasn't government issued. In essence, he wanted 3 different forms of residential proof, when I only have two (CDL & Lease). The language is clear "firearms dealers may accept any of the following"

I will bring the screen print of the Cal DOJ website so there's no confusion. Of course, my residential lease is not notorized, but I'll get that done since it's the easiest solution.
