    XD-45: Damn You, Springfield!

So I got an XD-45 a couple months ago and really dig it.
Now I see on the cover of G&A that they offer a "military" model with a thumb safety. Now I wish I'd waited! Was I just clueless? Had there been previous promo about this that I'd just totally missed?

That model might not even come in to California. Springfield is fed up with the BS in this state.

I would think that the model with the thumb safety too different to be put on the list "by similarity" to the other models. Hence it would require a mag-diconnect safety and, as we have seen with the ruger sr9, the xd LCI probably won't qualify.

Personally, I feel that the thumb safety is totally unnecessary and I do not like it. However, it was probably added to appeal to more police departments that might require it.

I don't think you missed any promos. I subscribe to G&A, American Rifleman, and peruse other gun mags when I'm at Fry's all the time. And the first time I've hear of this XD Military model when I got my G&A mag yesterday.

But I do agree with drclark, the thumb safety is unnecessary. I thought one of the main advantages of a striker fired pistol was that the trigger pull would feel similar to a revolver's trigger pull, thus reducing the amount of training of police officers who's departments were switching over from revolvers to autos?

On the bright side, you have your Cali XD45 and perhaps if enough XD45 owners ask, SA might retrofit earlier XDs with a thumb safety for a fee? It's seem like it would be a easy conversion?

I think they did it to make it more attractive to law enforcement and maybe the military.

I'm very happy to have picked one up before the extra safety. Pistol was lefty friendly until the addition.

it's still lefty friendly, and the model with thumb safety is an additional model, not a replacement.

That's good to know in case I want to pick up another (maybe a 5" next time). Thumb safety would be good if it can be reversed onto the other side so I can disengage with my left thumb (like 1911 ambi safeties). Wouldn't want to have to change my grip coming out of the holster to hit the safety.

If you want to "dig it" X 100, send it off to Jeremy at Springfield Custom. I've had two of them done with the "Competition Trigger Job" (set at 4.5lbs) to get the short takeup & resets, refit the barrel and replace the sights.....darn things shoot about like a custom 1911 now. I'm no master pistol shooter, but off-hand at 7yds, the first 20 rounds out of the Tactical made a ragged 2" hole (great considering I was behind the controls). When it locks up now, there is no movement whatsoever in the barrel.

Cheap?....no, but worth the investment. Makes the gun so much more shootable and pleasant to shoot with a better trigger and sights..... The Tactical is quickly becoming my favorite....

If when I decide to drop that cash, I'll do it on my A1 Loaded! But thanks for the tip.
I'm actually surprised by how well the XD handles right out of the box, though I would like to get some night sights for mine.
