If you guys aren't carrying condition 1, then play airsoft, or take a handgun class. Because you're living in a dream if you think you will always have time, mental clarity and physical ability to rack the slide in the moment of need.

The goal would be guarding against even astronomically unlikely unintended shootings while being able to cycle through to actual rounds in case of need.
You are not ready to carry a gun yet.

I read 1/2 the thread and gave up... maybe I'm dense on the subject, but I can't figure out exactly what OP is trying to accomplish or why (not being sarcastic).

What is the reason for wanting a dummy round? If you don't want one in the chamber, don't rack the slide (not a good idea for HD though). A dummy round isn't going to add any benefit to that - but could be a detriment when you do rack the slide and the round stove pipes or jams in chamber.

Condition 1 for HD (or CC) is the only thing that makes sense (imo).

The only time I use snap caps/dummy rounds, is to test new mags and/or new guns to be sure they cycle properly... and when I'm practicing drills in home. Using a dummy round for any real world use is extremely foolish.

*ETA: at the risk of seeming too skeptical - every time I read a new member post with questionable comments or concerns, my first inclination is that Yee (or any anti) is fishing... and I must admit, I thought the same in this thread - but I can't figure out how this would benefit the antis (unless they are getting very creative).

To those of you you have posted constructive answers (get a wheel gun, "dryer-test" the safety, "cruiser-load" a pump shotgun, etc...)- thank you.

I have a 92FS that I picked up as a range gun & am now trying to figure out how to use it as a HD gun before I start adding to the collection. All this planning is truly just "defense in depth" for wildly improbable situations, as is my home carry anyway (I have a very noisy driveway and a very... proactive alarm). Your help & comments on the "what if" scenario is very helpful and much appreciated.

Using acronyms like that may result in a vacation from the site. That's your warning.

As for why I was asking? Condition 3 is (absent WILLFUL misuse) proof against the improbable becoming probable; however, it is slower/more difficult to get ready than Condition 1 should I ever need to unholster a gun "in anger". Thus trying to figure out if there's a way to "waste" the first round but get the gun in battery faster.

If I ever need to pull a weapon "in anger"- aka ready to shoot something besides steel/paper targets- things have already gone past "ending well" and into "horrifically wrong OH S@!#". At that point I'm trying to make sure that me, mine, and as many others/bystanders as possible live to see another sunrise.

Things were already in the "horrifically wrong OH H@!#" territory when you decided to carry a gun with a snap cap in the chamber.

The 92F is a pretty 'safe' gun: long DA first trigger pull, manual safety, firing pin block. If you had it with a loaded chamber, decocked, and with the safety on it's not going to go off.

If you want an extra level of security, buy a holster that completely covers the trigger and has a thumb break that prevents the hammer from moving to the rear while the break is in place.

                        Perhaps something like this:

Galco's new Cop 3 Slot Holster is constructed of rich black premium cowhide. The precision-molded Cop 3 Slot holster, made to fit belts up to 1 3/4", allows comfortable carry in both strong side and cross draw positions.

I'm not all that knowledgeable about holsters, but perhaps others can point out the 'best' models to look at.

Op needs to lighten up; read and learn. Some good advice here and of course, this being the internet, some bad advice.
