i was thinking of using the xd for ccw but when i picked it up and tried to rack the slide wouldnt rack and then realized you have to have your damn hand on the backstrap safety i decided not to get it,

while taking my ccw class the teacher was teaching the thumbs forward high grip and alot of the older ppl in the class were having trouble with it, and a older gentlemen who had a xd wasnt hitting the backstrap safety right since he was trying a new grip and numerous times wouldnt fire, to me for ccw the less crap to get in the way the better

The grip safety on the XD's is pretty damn easy to depress, and as long as you have at least a half assed grip on the gun, its depressed. I put quite a few rounds through mine shooting USPSA, and never ran into an issue of a FTF due to the backstrap, and know quite a few other guys that run it also that have never run into an issue like that either.

Take an old moto innertube and wrap it around the grip, unless a houge grip is easier to obtain.

The only thing I found I didnt like on the xd is the slickness of the grip. I think I will put some grip tape on it or something for my wife.

With the grip, the grip tape is a pain because it always comes off and leaves a sticky residue behind. What you can do is stipple the grip. I have done this to all of my polymer guns. If you are in So. CAL you can PM me and I can do it for you for a small fee or you can look up how to do it yourself via YouTube. it is not hard but does take alot of time and its tedious. What you are doing is melting the grip and raising up the polymer just a bit to give it a raised texture. This does not effest the warraty of the gun at all. I checked with both S&W and Glock before I did mine. Below is the grip of my S&W.

Having run 1911's for decades the XD seems fine to me, no probs with the grip safety at all. And teaching our boy a couple years ago with it, no probs for him either.
