I just picked up my Glock 19 gen 4 and was wondering what would be a good .22 pistol to take to the range to practice? Does anyone have any recommendations? I shot a M&P22 but didn't like it too much. It could've been that it was a rental and beat to heck, but I digress. What would you recommend?

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

I'd add the S&W 22a is worth a look.
The SR-22 is the best of a bad bunch of tacticool 22s.Comment

SR22 is so hot, all my friends take over it when I go to the range, throwing aside my Glocks, 1911, 10/22, AR, AK, and shotgun over it.
It has by far the best handling of rapid fire for a .22 pistol ever. Hardly jams too. If I had to trust my life to it, once I get my LTC, I'd put it down as a bug gun and carry it as such.In Glock We Trust.

It's personal preference really, but I am looking into a Ruger MKIII 22/45. I just read up on Fluting as well, since the Hunter 22/45 is on the roster. I may just stick with the standard 5.5" Barrel.Comment

i actually have the s&w m&p22 and i've taken it to the range twice without cleaning. shot about 600 rounds of the cheapest mix and match 22lr i had about 4 ftf. the first 350 rounds or so was flawless.
i actually like it a lot, but thats just meComment

My Ruger SR22P has been a really great gun. I highly recommend itComment

As stated by others, it's really all personal preference. But with that said, I also own the Glock 19, as well as, the Glock 27 and thoroughly enjoy both those 9mm's. For range shooting with a 22, I have the Ruger Mark III Target (5.5 in bull barrel) and the Mark III Standard (6 in), both are great guns and very accurate, and very fun to shoot. For inexpensive trigger time, practicing fundamentals, and fun times at the range, they're excellent.
But the Mark III platform is very different from the Glock platform, and may not be suitable for what you are looking for. But that can be said for most 22's. I also have the Bersa Thunder 22 and it is a perfect match for my wife's Bersa Thunder 380... identical platform, and it is an excellent training tool for her carry gun. If that's what you're looking for, Advantage Arms may be the way to go.
For me, I like trigger time with several different guns... it's all practice. But I also always end my range time with my carry piece. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I will have to look into some of these. I'm due for a .22 pistol now, and I'm sure the lady would have a much better time firing a .22 then the louder 9mm. She didn't like my G19 the last time we went.

If it's YOU who wants to practice with cheaper ammo on a G19 platform, then get the Advantage Arms Glock 19 .22lr conversion kit.
If it's YOUR LADY who wants to shoot a .22LR, then get something that's feel comfortable in her hands and is easy for her to handle. A full size 1911 or 4" or 6" revolver in .22LR may be good for her then.Comment

How much does it cost to get the conversion kit? And how hard/easy is it to install and reinstsall from 9mm to .22? Thanks for the information! If it's YOU who wants to practice with cheaper ammo on a G19 platform, then get the Advantage Arms Glock 19 .22lr conversion kit.

About $300 depending on which solution you go with. It's as simple as field stripping your weapon to replace the slide (with the .22 barrel/recoil spring) and a new magazine: http://glockstore.com/pgroup_descrip...onversion+Kit/
Edit: Wow just noticed the 3-12 months backorder time on that kit from GlockStore.com, might want to shop around or check a different brand but you get the idea.Last edited by Roland Deschain; 11-13-2012, 3:48 PM.Comment
