I had one in the early 70's. Traded it for a S&W 28. At the time I had applied for a sheriff's reserve position and could only carry a wheelgun. Nice auto and I wish I still had it.

Queit's gun set up is just EPIC!
The liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.
The conservative see's glass as half empty and tries to keep it that way.
I'm with the people on the side just pouring water in the glass trying to get a drink!

There were a few listings that sold for or had B-I-N in that range, on guns that were 95% or better. But Gunbroker is notorious for shills and overbidders. Last time I bid on a used Beretta 92FS Inox and a used Glock 17, bone stock and no extras, somehow people managed to get ending prices of both guns to 750 and 500 respectively, before shipping/FFL transfer fees.

If I remember, various online dealers and private forum listings in the free states also sold S&W 39's for that price range a few years ago. Maybe demand is rising, who knows.

I have a nickel 39-2 coming out of jail in a day. I've read a tremendous amount of information on the model 39's in the last several weeks. And every single person that has sold their 39 has stated they regretted it. Get it, you won't regret it. I can't wait for mine!

All of these comments.. have you guys really ever own and shot these guns... S&W Autos have the worst double / single action pulls of all the semi auto pistols. specailly the 1st gen guns.. even their 5906/6906, the trigger has not improve. If you have a chance rent a 3rd gen like the 3906 and shoot it.. I guarantee you will hate it...

Coming from someone that actually owns a 39 and a gen3 S&W the DA/SA triggers are not bad at all on S&W pistols. If you think they are "the worst double / single action pulls of all semi auto pistols" then you need extensive work on your trigger control fundamentals.

Hey, if you like the extremely long single action pull, good for you... sounds like buyers remorse than anything.. like I said, there are tons of these pistol floating around, the later gens improve on the earlier gens flaws.. but they all have the same trigger.. go to your local range and shoot one and see if you like it.. there is a reason why S&W autos are in the $300 range all day long.. people dont like them, good quality.. but horrible trigger design.. these are cheap alternative if you cannot afford a used glock.. If you look at the new prices on these back in the 1990s (wonder nine years) compared to other guns, they cost $500-$600 price range, at the time, you had your choice of Beretta 92, Sig 226, CZ75 ($350), etc... in todays used pricing, all of the comparable models are $500-$700 yet the S&W is in the $300 range.. there is a reason for this.. part of which is mentioned above.

Is there a reason why you think that all firearms have to be for competition or SD?... That is how ^ that comes off. It shows your ignorance when you make biased statements like above ^. I am sorry for you, that you can't find a point for a firearm like the S&W 39 with it's historical significance but others can. But you would probably say the same thing about the p38, Luger, Mauser, etc..

The trigger on my Smith, and others that I've held and played with are on par with Sig, Beretta, and above HK triggers.

The OP is interested in getting a S&W semi auto, I was just advising him to try it out before he buys, as far as historical value, sure it was the first DA/SA for S&W (but it was a poor design. even though other designed have been proven a decade earlier.. S&W did not get it right). The Luger P08 are far superior in quality, those are individually hand fitted, and was one of the best pistol at the time (this does not include the 1920s mixmasters which are undesireable), the P38 was truly the first DA/SA pistol, also well made. M96 Broomhandle another pistol break thru in design... the S&W 39 copied (Like many other current pistol mfg) from these pistols as well as the 1911 and Hipower, so what historical significance.. outside of being the first US manfucture to do so... please... So what is your point. The OP wants to buy it but Im giving him all the facts, he will have a hard time selling when he need the cash. And yes, I've owned all the pistols mentioned above and well as other variantion or copied designs, just trying to steer them away from making a bad choice...

Problem is a lot of commenters on here tend to get their infomation on stuff they read from Gun magazines whom gets paid by the manufacture for a good review... very few have actual experience with the actual firearm assumes they do since they read it.. are you one of those?

I just went to the gunstore and put the handgun on lay-a-way to be picked up at the end of November. What beautiful pistol it is. I'll post picks of it when I finally pick it up.
