Glock. .40 is Model 22. Best handguns I've ever own. Must have 8-10,000 rounds through mine without so much as a hiccup.Manteca Sportsmen General website.

I love my Barretta 92fs but the guy I bought it from shot himself in the palm of the hand with it trying to clear a jam. It's been a fine gun for me.Comment

.40 caliber about $600
Before I answer I'll make the assumption that this .40 is not for concealed carry, but for home defense and range use.
My .40 experience includes owning Glocks, Sigs and H&Ks in that caliber. They are all excellent brands with good reliability and accuracy. But if your intent does not involve carry, you probably don't need a polymer frame gun, whose main advantage is weight reduction. Heavier guns with metal frames are easier to shoot well, as the weight steadies the gun and absorbs recoil.
So that would eliminate the Glocks and H&Ks, leaving the metal Sigs and a few other metal brands, such as CZs and some Berettas. In the Sig line I would recommend the P229 and P226 models, both of which are available in .40. I have the P229 in that caliber, and it is excellent. I bought mine used for $500 a few years back, and I think you can still find a used one today in the $600 range. New P229s are probably in the $750 or higher range.

Sig P229
Sig P226
HK P2000
HK USP
S&W M&P .40
Steyr M40A1
Glock 22
XD .40
That's in order of what I'd choose. To save money, seriously consider the Steyr. It's a fantastic gun for the price.

Depending on how it fits in your hand, it might be a better choice for you. Dunno, I love my Glocks. Designer is a genius.
To be honest, the only thing I do NOT like about the Glocks are the sights as they are plastic. Most people don't do the following but I found those plastic sights break right off when doing '1 hand manipulations' off a holster. (Try racking the slide to clear a jam, or put in a new round using the rear sight). Haven't had issue since I replaced them with a metal trijicon rear sight, but probably wouldn't be an issue for most people.
+1 on no sigma. Heard great things about S&W's M&P.Manteca Sportsmen General website.

Recommendations
Not sure why everyone rips on the S&W Sigma - have one in 9mm and one in .40 and have been happy with their performance.
I would recommend the Glock 27 if you are looking at something that you want to carry. I've also used a Taurus PT140 and liked it.
If you don't mind something a little bigger, look at the Springfield XDs.Comment
