Went today to a big gun dealer and looked couple different brands. Dealer told me that 1911 springfields are made in Brazil and he said that Kimber is better pick , also he said that guns for sale from Colt are old technology ?? California is hella expensive any gun that is hand fitted is like close to 2K or more. Looked also on S&W but don't like external ejector, will see, have to go this weekend to see some other dealers and talk to them ... thanks guys for suggestions.

I have 4 SA 1911's and have never had any issues with any of them. A Sig Scorpion is also a good choice for something under $1200. Accurate and reliable. I paid $999 for mine.sigpicComment

Just rescanned this entire thread and wanted to warn you to beware of anyone who says "Only get brand X" or "Never get brand Y"...
I own 1911s from every mfg listed on this thread (other than the Remington) and they all have pluses and minuses. Follow the advice of those who have said to buy what you like and feels good to you.

I'd personally go with a DW, but if you are somehow limited to your list by time/money/availability I'd go with the Sig. If you don't mind waiting it out you can find some really good deals here and elsewhere.. especially for something you might want that is just a bit out of your price range when buying it new. I picked up a like new (Looked unfired) CBOB for $1050 not long ago.. when you figure $50 for the extra pair of sarge's grips that came with it, it was a really good deal. Granted that won't be typical, but there have been a lot of nice 1911s going up for sale lately, might be worth it to hold out for the right one."Everybody is a genius. Never, never, never ask a gun dealer what to buy. They're the most clueless bunch and they have a vested interest in making the most money possible, not getting you the best gun for you. Do some research on the internet and ask around here. I have no interest in anything other than helping you find a nice gun. Dealers want you to spend as much money as possible.
I can't say anything bad about Springfield, S&W or even RIA. I can say something bad about Kimber, but I'll let Hilton Yam (who is a 1911 god) say it for me:

What they should be telling you is to go out and actually fire each gun and decide which one is overall best for you. Simply feeling great in your hand does not make a gun a good buy, you may end up hating it. For instance Glocks feel absolutely fantastic in my hand, however, I hate shooting them. Bottom line is while I think they look good and feel great in my hand, I hate firing a Glock, so I wouldn't go out and buy one. In fact I've bought two hoping/thinking it would grow on me. Since you likely won't find the exact models that you are considering buying available for rent, you are likely to end up having to make a choice based on the opinion(s) of people you've asked.. so I'll give you the reasons that I picked DW as my first choice for a budget of around $1200, which was right about what I had to spend when I bought my CBOB. Steel frame, first and foremost. Dws come with a match grade barrel as well. fitment, tolerances and finish are all superb and (IMO) unmatched until you enter Baer territory. Like others have said, you are right in the middle with $1200. You can get a Colt XSE or Springfield loaded for under $1000 and have a great gun with a lot of features. You can spend $1500 and spend more and get a good gun as well but not really worth the extra compared to the XSE or loaded.Originally posted by barrageComment

It's all a matter of opinion but your average shooter won't be able to notice. For a first gun I would take a gun and ammo and enjoy it then to drop so much on a first gun since 45 is expensive enough. The ideal thing would be to spend $1000 on the gun and the rest on reloading equipment and really shoot the gun.Originally posted by barrageComment

Kimber custom ii was my first firearm... 600 rounds through it so far, and it's been flawless. After reading all the ridiculous kimber hate on the internet, I was pretty nervous. The only thing I would change is... Well, I got night sights installed (shout out to CC Gunsmithing for a job well done!). So if I were you, I'd get the tle. Just my 2 cents... However, My second firearm was a 9mm ria tactical (thanks to EBR works!). whatever you get, shoot the hell out of it and enjoy it!sigpic

That page is funny because my Kimber Raptor is at 8000 rounds with only spring changes. I run 600-1000 rounds without cleaning and it always runs like a champ.
