My first choice would be Sig P229 or HK USP

For the money and reliability the Glock 27, Glock 23 or Glock 35.

For carry, the Glock 27 is nice.

For really any purposes other than race gun shooting, you can't go wrong with an M&P or Glock. A full-size M&P, even though it is a full-size gun can be carried with the right belt/holster/cover garment combo.

                Polymer:

                USP Full size 40S&W

                Glock 22, 23

                Steyr M40A1

USP is probably my favorite 40s&w in polymer platform. Slide action is very smooth. Steyr also make a very solid polymer. And Glock, well, what can I say about Glock you have not already hear/read?

                  Alum alloy frame:

Sig P226 (9mm shown in picture but available in 40s&w)

                  Beretta 96 G "Vertec"

Taurus 92AFS (with barrel conversion for 40s&w)

Sig and Beretta's build quality are just top notch. Both have great trigger right out of box. Taurus is a nice budget choice of Beretta. I would said it's 90% of build quality compare to Beretta and 75% of price. The frame mount safety is a big bonus. Down side, not all part/accessories are compatible with Beretta. And much smaller after market parts/accessories market compare to Beretta.

Whatever reason, I like my 40S&W in polymer or full steel platform more so than in alum alloy frame.

                      Full steel:

CZ 75 (SA 9mm shown in picture but available in 40s&w)

Browning Hi Power (9mm shown in picture but available in 40s&w)

Only two full steel 40s&w I can think of on top of my head. For 40s&w, I would recommend CZ over HP. Solely due to the slide and hammer action of HP 40s&w. HP strengthen the springs and few minor parts to over come the extra power of 40s&w caliber.

and you can also get a .22lr conversion 3 guns in 1

Going against the Glock grain here, but I'd recommend a Beretta Px4 Storm. The rotating barrel absorbs some of the recoil, safety works as an auto de-cocker, and it's extremely easy to field strip and re-assemble. Just my $.02.

That's the best part (IMO) of 40s&w platform pistol. Not just Glock, most common 40s&w pistol can easily convert to 9mm.

                              You forgot every 1911 in .40 S&W.

There are several, but here are some examples.
