Here's a better comparison:

Cleaning your guns after every range trip is like cleaning and vacuuming your car after every trip to the supermarket.

Totally unnecessary, but just a matter of preference.

In my opinion though, some people here are borderline OCD

I clean my 1911s every time after a range trip. Glocks, almost never.

Depends on the gun, depends on the ammo, depends on what the gun's intended use is for, etc. For the first few years that I was a gun owner I loved cleaning my guns, now, not so much, I down right hate it some times.

Now, if I fire under 500rds of clean ammo, I just run a bore snake threw the gun, field strip, inspect and quickly brush off any caked carbon build up in the slide, frame, muzzle and crown, maybe some lube where and if needed, wipe down the outside, function check, then wipe the whole outside with an oily rag and put it away.

Over 500 rds, I might bring out the rod and patches, but I will clean the internals and relube thoroughly, that is, avoiding any detailed disassembly if possible. Basically, I try to avoid any unnecessary scrubbing of the barrel and any constant detail stripping.
