Cleaning a gun after every time you shoot is like saying you change the oil in your car after every time you drive it around town.

I clean after every trip to the range as well. Field strip, clean and lube or oil. I think you really risk having issues if you're popping out pins to detail strip all the time.Comment

No, it's like changing the oil after every 4 sec 1/4 mile in a top fuel dragster. Or it's like changing the oil after every track day in my motorcycle. That's the way I treat my guns, everytime. Maybe it's not necessary, but it sure doesn't hurt if you're cleaing it correctly.Comment

I clean my XD and Ak's whenever they start leaking out nasty black crap.
The CZ, 22's and shotgun get treated a little nicer. The 22 I clean every time since its a target gun.Sandstorm Custom Rifle Slings : Custom Paracord slings

Whenever I get the chance, or am in the mood to do so. Definitely before they "need" it.sigpic"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are."

First off-I have all metal guns (no polymers). I clean after every use,but I clean according to how much I shot it. If I only ran a box thru a gun, I may brush the bore 3/4 times with Hoppes. More depending on use. I usually spray the action off with carbruator (or brake) cleaner, let dry and give the whole shebang a light coat of G-33 or breakfree (including the bore....Good till the next shootComment

I usually clean and lube the AR, & M9 after every range trip if I put >150 rounds through 'em, as these are my go-to arms for HD. I don't clean the AR like the issued M16A2, back in the day... as there are no inspections at home. If I have time, I clean the lady's SR9 too, and she doesn't volunteer to clean her own much...
The 10/22 I do about every other range trip, as of late.
I get 1000 cotton swabs (w/ long wooden sticks) for about $4.70 (cost at work), so cleaning the AR is much easier than with Q-Tips, and I can get those otherwise hard to reach areas.
Bores get a final coat, that is pretty-soppy. Yes, I use CLP exclusively.

It depends on the guns intended job.
My SD/HD weapons are cleaned after every time i put rounds through them. My range pistol i run a little dirty just to see what it's capable of (Glock 17). Even so i always run a bore snake through the barrel to get all the powder residue out of there. Probably clean it ~300-500 rnds. Give or take.
Anything mechanical needs to be clean in order to run properly. Generally."Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."Comment

I clean the gun after every range trip. All that really means is a wipe it down and oil it up...I do not use an solvents or anything to clean. I guess after 1000 rounds i would do a complete strip. I find that if you wipe down and oil after every range trip you really do not need any major cleaning.Comment

This is my Sig with over 2,200 rounds, no cleaning and no lubrication added

I've cleaned it since then, but it really comes down to the type of gun primarily, and personal preference secondarily.
If you have a match grade 1911 with very tight tolerances, you'll HAVE to clean it more often then say your average Glock or M&P (or in my case, Sig).We in Bangor, Maine now baby.Comment

I clean my guns after each range trip unless I know I'll be taking that same gun out to shoot the following weekend or in a few short days. In that case I would just field strip and wipe it down and relube. The cleaning process may last a few days depending how many dirty guns I've created at the last range trip or trip to the desert.
I like to keep my guns clean and lubed and ready to go out of the safe. Very seldom I would get any malfunctions during any of my range trips.
Guns I don't shoot - I typically take out of the safe once or twice a year for a field strip, inspection, a quick wipe down and relube.Comment

Man I loves me some hyperbole
. As long as cleaning guns doesn't cost $60, and we're not federally required to dispose of dirty q-tips at a recycling facility, isn't this comparison a little silly?
It's more like washing your car every week, whether it rained or not. Just a matter of pride.Comment
