Haven't dealt with Ken/Karen at the range, but I did have a gun store clerk tell me my Rossi ranch hand was an illegal sbr because I sawed off half the barrel and stock. I had a good time explaining to him about ranch hand/ mare's leg. Then the guy wanted to know if I'd sell it to him for $500 since that's what they go for on gunbroker. I spent some more time explaining what "off-roster" means.

it's a funny ask. I always answer this with another question: Why do you need that BMW (or insert family member's nice car) when a Nissan Versa does the same thing. Why do you need a Gucci purse when a $20 Ross special holds the same contents? Why do you have 8 pairs of Air Jordan's when you will never wear them?
Usually met with silence.Comment

Wow! Where I go, I would say about 90% of the rifles are AR's of some variety. Rest are a mix of various milsurp platforms, a few AK's and the occasional rimfire for the kids. If anyone didn't like scary looking black rifles, they wouldn't last long.
Had a similar experience when my sons and I were sighting in our ARs. A couple of old geezers were muttering 'no body needs a gun like those'. They were using some muzzle loaders (and not even hitting the paper yet @50 yards). We just smiled at one another and moved on to the 100 yard range.Pooty Poot, you sure screwed the pooch this time! - Ghost of Roza Shanina, WWII Soviet SniperComment

Almost had an issue once at the club I belong to. I was testing a shotgun I repaired. I ripped off five rounds as fast as I could and the old boy walks over to see what I had just fired. I loaded five more and told him he was next to shoot it if he wanted. He declined and walked away. I can rip a semi auto pretty fast if I want to. No rules against rate of fire at the range.
While a visitor at another club range I had a guy jump my butt for picking up a piece of brass that was off the concrete. I never stepped off just reached and grabbed it one inch away. He told me I was beyond the firing line on a hot range. He then tried to scold me for shooting a carbine on the pistol range. It was a 38 special lever action. I pointed to the sign that said pistol calibers only not pistols only.
I looked at my friend, that invited me, and said loud enough that Ken heard me…”what kind of range is this?, next is he going to tell me I cannot shoot until I say mother may eye!”JAC😂 1Comment

I can't use that answer...HaHa They drive a Prius, and shop at Ross and Target/Walmart. They (Sister in Law and Husband) Are just anti 2A. Which is confusing to me, because the husband is retired 82nd Airborne.

I’m an RSO at a (popular) outdoor range. I’m not telling you which one although a few may have already guessed right.
that being said, for over 8 years, i’ve never been interested in what firearm anyone brings, as long as they are SAFE in using said firearm and obey the rules. And yes, people have been kicked out for disobeying.
I’m 100% more worried about a “range accident” that can hurt people and shut down the range than I am about whatever configuration illegal assault rifle you shoot (as long as its not full auto). i’m also the type that i want all customers to mind their own business and worry about their own safety than the gun configurations of others. Seriously. Mind your own business, and thankfully 99% of the shooters there have.
now. All that being said,
Stay safe, and enjoy your time!Last edited by Zenderfall; 03-19-2025, 4:47 PM.NRA Pistol/Rifle Instructor

Not since the very early days of the bullet button and ARs becoming a thing again here in CA. Back then you had to drive pretty far to find a gun store who even knew there was such a thing as a California legal AR or AK type rifle. Most people are very "don't ask don't tell". I'll initiate conversations with people at the range all the time, and they'll say they were surprised that my guns were CA legal. But no one ever confronts me about them.Comment

Usually I stay away from indoor ranges. But have been to indoor ranges multiple times with standard cap mags, AR pistols with arm braces, Surefire "trainer" suppressors, with US marshals and uniformed cops on range and no on looks or says anything.
Have even struck up conversations on gear and they don't care.
I have a few friends that are local cops and Sheriff and they also don't care as long as your not committing crimes with them."Ya dude just bought my 67th gun today"......sigpicComment
