I disagree with everyone here. I think the roster is a great idea, and its sole failing is that it is applied only to guns. Really, we should have a roster for everything. Yellow Honda good, blue Honda bad. Hamburger buns with sesame seeds OK, without sesame seeds, not OK. Think how much safer we'd all be if we had safety rosters for everything. Why must we live in a world where only the guns are safe?

people have gotten into the habit of saying "Illegal" b/c gun stores tell them that, and in fact it is illegal for them to sell you one but it's not an illegal gun.

I know it's just language but it perpetuates a myth and we don't need anymore of those floating around out there...

Can somebody explain to me why the ultralite S&W 629PD and Taurus 444 in .44 w/ a 4" barrel are only legal in CA is they are stainless steel? Why on Earth would the blued version be illegal and not on the approved list?
It makes no sense.

If you drop a blued version it will aim at your nuts and shoot clean through the left one. The bullet will then turn and shoot your puppy and kitten. After hitting your gas main and making a ricochet sound, the bullet will kill your baby. You will then burn to death. If you drop a stainless version it will not discharge and it will bounce right back into your hand. How did you not know this?

S&W rep says the gun dealer is wrong, the DOJ description references the metals in the gun, not the finish so i should be okay with the blued version.

QFT. I just got two new people to buy their first handgun and they are both pretty outraged at the roster. They were saying the same thing; "how is this unsafe and this one is safe".

"It's not about safety, it's about control. Not gun control, YOU control."

At least I got two more gun owners in before the election. Guess who got forwarded my CRPA "who to vote for in the state legislature that is gun friendly" email?

It's not a roster of safe handguns. It's a roster of "not unsafe" handguns. The guns on there have been proven to be not unsafe, which does not make other guns unsafe it just means they haven't been tested.

Seriously, to say it's a list that the state compiled of safe guns, implying that anything not on it isn't a safe gun, is totally misleading. It is a list of guns who's manufacturers paid CA to test them -- which really means paid for the right to sell them in this state. It's both a deterrent to firearms entering the state, which suits the general political agenda of CA, and a way to make money off of the manufacturers and make it even harder for the purchasers.

Since this is so arbitrary and completely irrational, I don't understand why no one's made a legal challenge to it yet. Maybe the CONCEPT of a roster is legally sound, but the way this one is implemented is absolutely ridiculous, as everyone here is all too aware.

I feel your pain. I wanted to buy a Sig P-6 online, but the DOJ list only has 1 approved importer, even though several importers brought them in. Yet the Sig p225, which is the identical pistol, is on the approved list. I was told to just close my eyes and think of England.

Heck, I am going to get a Walther PPQ via SSE--that will show that wascally wabbit!!

If you really wanted a P-6, why didn't you just buy one "online" locally and do a PPT on it? I'm picking mine up tomorrow and it's one of the nicest examples of a German issued P-6 that I've seen. In the back of your mind you're always going to have thoughts about how you want one. It's just a natural instinct in all of us, when we're told that we can not have this or that, told don't do this or that.....well we're drawn to doing, or having, these things like a moth to a flame.

Go on...tell me more. What difference does the finish make on function? Maybe the S&W is a better choice.

Same reason you can get the Kimber Raptor's in either the Ultra model or the Custom model, but not the Pro sized model....don't make sense, does it?

There are plenty more guns out there that aren't on the list because of finish, but others are.

The Roster is not about function or safety. It's about the Legislature taking the power to define guns as 'good' and 'bad'.
