So much hate for the Glock factory sights... I like them. I also don't go firing at night either so I've never had the urge to go buy some.

Put bullets in, shoot, repeat. Thorough cleaning, in between, is optional.

Buy lots of ammo & shoot her, it is a Glock, no need special treatment.

The manual for my Gen 3 17 makes no mention of cleaning before use. The manual for my Gen 4 21 says to clean and lube before use.

The "cooper" colored stuff keeps coming up in this thread. I don't know what it is but on the 21 it was a nightmare to get of. It was gritty and sticky and did not feel like it had any lubricating properties at all.

it comes with factory lubricant on it already you don't need to clean out only after you fired it...

I used to like the factory "U" sights, until I tried a friends with TruGlo TFO's . I put a set on my G17 and my G19. They are so much easier to pick up in all light conditions. My competition scores went up just because I am able to get on target so much faster.

To keep track of rounds, i tear the flap off the end of the ammo box and after 500 rnds, i rubber band them. I don't think its noobish to keep track, i like to do a clean and breakdown every 300 rnds or so.

What a great pistol. Its true, you dont need to do anything to it out of box. But... I very much recommend you do the "25 cent trigger job". Look it up on youtube, lots of info on the www too. I've shot thousand and thousands of rounds through my glock and when something finally broke and it was down for parts, I fig why not. Took me a total of maybe an hr, and the trigger is much smoother. Smoother trigger=better trigger control. I should have done it sooner. And, if you dont know how to detail strip the pistol, you should learn. And it was the slide lock spring that broke. May want to swap it out as the new one was much thicker that the original. Then again, being a new one maybe you dont have to. That was around the 7K rounds count.

+1 on that. Add it to "things I will never understand," too.

Another awesome thing to get is a good set of ear protection, over the ear kind. I learned this the hard way a few hours ago... those little orange foam thingies don't do jack.
Came here for the gun porn, stayed for the... well yeah the gun porn made me stay.

My posts should be taken with a grain of salt as I am in no way an expert on anything.

Currently interested in purchasing a Ruger 10/22 in the Santa Clara County area. Preferably the compact/wood stock version. Leapers UTG Quadrail would be a major plus.

This has turned into a great thread, thanks for all the input!

I think I will hold off on mods of any kind for a while, I will learn how to take it apart though, that will be important.

Think I am going to try to find a decent safe, wonder if they make any that double as night-stands...?

                            Recommendations on good ear protection?
If I wear glasses, would I still need specific eye protection as well?

I'm interested in any tips towards affordable ear protection as well. And in my limited experience glasses are good enough for most ranges. There's still some risk of a spent casing popping up on top of them but I had that happen with the regular goggles I used once so I'm willing to accept that risk in lieu of not doubling up my eye protection. Plus, chicks dig scars. And eyepatches.

Maybe not so much on the eyepatches.

I wear prescription glasses for shooting, they are impact resistant polycarbonate with my dominant eye corrected to the front sight and my weak eye corrected to infinity.
