First Steps With a New Glock?

So in 9 days I will have my first handgun, a Glock 17, gen 3. What is the first order of business with a brand new gun? Besides, of course, firing it

I have read that it should be stripped and greased right away, I have also read to not touch it and just go...

Would appreciate any input for this new handgun owner.

I have just taken out my new Glocks and fired them, several hundred times. Then, do it again and again!

You picked probally one of the most durable if not the best 9mm stock handgun out there for a striker fired pistol. Good choice.

Dont grease a glock, use subtle amounts of normal gun oil/lube.

Just buy some magazines, a holster and then light. If it came with night sights already then you got a good deal.

Just make sure you read the manual on it and understand how to take it apart.

Dont get into heavily customizing these things. Honestly the more competition crap or non OEM trigger's you put in it just isnt worth the time. Its a great combat trigger. Its not for everyone.

In the research I did before getting my own glock I saw two trains of thought toward lubing it. I chose not to do anything before taking it out to the range because as many people pointed out, glock puts some fancy special (some even say high quality) lube on it straight from the factory.

That said, I'm still waiting on my cleaning kit to arrive to I can give it a once over. I only put 150 rounds through it so far cuz I'm poor and ammo is more expensive and goes quicker than I thought it would.

EDIT: I should probably note that I'm in no way an expert on guns, but glocks seem to be foolproof. And I am definitely a fool.

I'd say glocks are one of the few ready-to-fire guns straight out of the box if new. They have that copper-looking lubricant along the slides already.

Though it wouldn't hurt to disassemble it a few times to get the feel for it then maybe wipe an oily rag on the metal parts in the frame and the barrel. (Don't over oil these things you'll just have more carbon gunk up in the oil and be a PITA to clean or cause a failure eventually)

On my Glocks I think I only used BreakFree CLP on everything then scrub and wipe down... Wiped down the insides of the slides a little less than the rest of it.

Edit: As in wiping off less excess lubricant than I wipe away from the rest of the gun.

Yes, Glocks are great and ready to fire out of the box.

If the gun is brand spanking new (not "new-to-you"), clean the barrel with some CLP if you should choose (not really necessary), but do not clean off the copper-looking lubricant on the slide. I think a older version of the Glock Armorer's manual said something about not cleaning that stuff as it helps with the slide conditioning.

Be careful with the CLP around the firing pin hole and another hole in the slide; you might gunk up the firing pin assembly and it is indeed a PITA to clean.

Excellent! Thank you all for input and support, my friend that told me about this place just told me about a bulk ammo buy, so I will have 1k rounds coming

I really can't see myself doing any competition shooting, so heavy mods would not be something I would look into. Though maybe some upgraded (night?) sights.

That's a very gentle way to say it - I'd go a little stronger than that:

DO NOT LUBE THE STRIKER/FIRING PIN. DO NOT PUT OIL/LUBE IN THE FIRING PIN CHANNEL. IT SHOULD BE DRY.

Really. It's not just that the striker doesn't require oil - it needs to be dry. If you get oil/lube in there, it attracts/retains crud, which slows down/obstructs the striker, leading to light primer strikes or failures to fire.

Ask me how I know.

The manual shows the parts that need oil. Put a little oil/grease there if you want.

Another thing I have noticed reading around is that people seem to account for every round fired through their weapon. Thus, I assume this will be a good thing to do? How do you all do that, by counting literally each shot? Tally marks on a notebook?

Take a course. www.GoFast1.com up here in Sacramento is affordable. Might be one closer to you as well. Won't regret it. Smartest move a new shooter can make.

Have fun with your Glock! Just get an approx round count. People use this if they sell their firearms. Hopefully it won't be with yours! G17 is a keeper. I'd get nights sights and SS recoil rod. That's about it!
