I agree with BamBam, ideally you'd want 2 different ones so you can change a buncha things on your Comp gun and keep your home defense gun relatively stock with night sights (preference only). If you must have only 1 gun for both, I'd take the night sights. It will slow you down some in competition but won't be the major limiting factor when first starting out.So it seems like blacked out rear sights and a fiber optic front are the way to go. On top of being my range/competition gun my G34 will also serve duty as a nightstand home defense gun. I will be putting either a TLR1 or an X300 on the front for this...will the blacked out rear and FO front still work well in a dark environment with a gun mounted flashlight?Comment

A couple things. I have to agree with the others that I keep my comp guns and my home defense guns separate. Although I do shoot my HD guns at IDPA every few months just to keep familiarity with the gun. The only modification to my HD guns are a FO front. Here are my HD guns:So it seems like blacked out rear sights and a fiber optic front are the way to go. HK USP9 (nightstand gun). Only modification is FO front sight. Rears are stock 2 white dot.
Glock 23 (office gun). Modification is a FO front sight, rears are Glock Night Sights.
With the Glock 23, the gun came with night sights (I got it with a GSSF coupon too). I tried it for a while, but I eventually decided that the FO is just better for me. I had a blacked out rear on an M&P compact and I felt like I gave up on some accuracy especially at farther targets. FOR ME, the white dot rears are not AS distracting. I found that I MIGHT have faster sight acquisition with a blacked out rear, but it didn't seem a big enough difference in contrast to the lack of accuracy that was measurable at distance. My advice would be to just put black electrical tape over the rear dots and see if you like them. If you like it that way, then you can go paint over the white dots or change out the rear.
As for illumination with a rail mounted light, I can't comment on that because I don't have one. I know that with my handheld LED light, the FO picks up the ambient light pretty well. I also would mention that you should make sure your gun functions with that light on it. I've heard some people have malfunctions with certain light/gun/operator combinations. Just make sure you bring it to the range and test it out thoroughly.Last edited by Kodemonkey; 04-18-2012, 10:22 AM.Comment

Thanks for the great advice guys. I agree that 2 handguns is the way to go but seeing that I had no firearms at the beginning of the year and now have 3 and 1 more on the way I am done buying guns as my wife was already very understanding with a baby on the way to green light these 4 guns as I am still in school while she works
. At the beginning of next year when I get another gssf coupon I will be getting another glock to turn into a dedicated home defense gun. For now I will shoot some competitions with this g34 stock and will consider getting a fiber optic front sight if I need some more up front as I do really like how the fiber optic on my shotgun pops out.

Well, to be fair to him, if he shoots well with the stock sights, then there is no arguing about it. Everyone sees and shoots differently.
Aftermarket sights tend to be better, or else they would fail in the marketplace and just disappear, but that's not to say that stock sights are complete junk.==================

I've told this story before, but here it is again: I went into Bain & Davis a while back to have them change out some sights on my Glock. (This was before I figured out how easy it was to do it myself.) One of the guys there (Charlie, I believe) just slid off the OEM plastic sights with his bare fingers. Haven't had much faith in those plastic sights since.sigpicComment

Maybe not for sighting, but for durability they are junk.Well, to be fair to him, if he shoots well with the stock sights, then there is no arguing about it. Everyone sees and shoots differently.

If you own a Glock that you intend to actually use in an environment other than plinking at the range, do yourself a favor and get a quality set of sights.Comment

i run dawson fiber front thin and fiber adjustable rear. i run it for 3gun, uspsa, and action pistol. truely awesome. the fo is nice and thin, the front blade being thin lets you see some light in between rears so it's very precise. oh i run the red front with green rear fibers. after 3+ years of matches have never broken a front fiber.Originally posted by bubbapug1how to make a sig better...trade it in for a glock.Comment
