I wouldn't say if it weren't true. And I've actually left out talking more about the police response for a reason. That reason is that this thread is about taking your security into your own hands.

Instead of feeling like a victim (which is totally understandable in this case) I felt more triumphant that I'd planned for these things. One measure of security is often not enough.

Yes it was my hammer. This is the one time I was happy I had a crappy chinese POS in my house.

I'm glad that you were able to keep everything in a safe and you weren't ripped off. A safe is the next thing on my list. I have to many hand me downs from my late father that could never be replaced. I'm getting the taxes done this week. Hopefully there's enough money for a safe. A Costco one would be good enough for my needs.

How does this work? The alarm company monitors your hardwired phone line outside of your house or does your alarm have a radio modem in which case the phone line is just a backup?

Everyone needs a home alarm. I lost 3 firearms as well as everything if value in my house. But DO NOT go with ADT, they are horrible!!!

Don't trust alarm salesmen. They work on commission and will lie and deceive to make a sale. Alarm installers like cable repair guys can be worse than incompetent.

I had *** Cable come out and switch to digital phone service. They were so inept that they basically disabled my alarm's phone line seize feature.

Your alarm is your first line of defense. Trip the silent alarm if you aren't sure of who is in your house. Make sure you get service with a radio modem (avoiding phone line problems) and especially the crash and smash feature (BGs can trip your alarm and destroy your alarm panel, but the cops will already be notified).
