If you get a safe, don't forget to bolt it down, just like OP did with his handgun safe.

A crook would have no problem tipping the safe over to get better leverage on it with a crowbar OR outright cart it out on a dolly!

My safe is installed in a corner so that the hinges are on the right and the left side is up against a wall, so it would be really hard to pry from the left.

Sorry to hear about the attempt, good for you for having stuff squared away so that the bad guy wasn't successful!

When an alarm company comes through a neighborhood offering free installation it is usuually just two doors, a few windows and a motion detector unless you pay extra. I'm sure many theives know this and what to look for from the outside to know if a window is alarmed.

Since he had limited time and went straight for your guns do you think he knew about the guns or just went looking for goodies in the master bedroom?

Now that he knows about the alarm and the guns, next time he will bring a prybar and cut your phone line first - the last alarm company that came through my neighborhood was pushing the cellular upgrade claiming a house a just few blocks away got hit that way.

Your good preparations got you through the first round, you might want to consider putting the HD guns in the big safe and only take them out when you are home. Some real or fake cameras might be a good idea too. Even if it was just a teenager who doesn't have the balls to come back that doesn't mean he won't tell someone else who does.

Sorry to be the pessimist! I've had my personal cars broken into 4 or 5 times, my company truck 3 times, and my Jeep was stolen twice. I bought a house in a nice neighborhood and within a year someone cuts through a cable lock and steals a pressure washer out of the back of my company truck (which was backed up against the garage door). The cop said it is normal for teenagers to walk around my area at night with boltcutters looking for stuff to steal.

If I'm paranoid it is because they ARE out to get me!

          Best of luck!

Was it your hammer? RIP, hammer if it was yours.

Good to see that the burglar got nothing. Great job on your gun security.

What city in the East Bay? We were fortunate to get out of the Bay Area 12 years ago although we were West side, mid peninsula. Does sound like someone had some inside info on your setup. Fake and real cameras and a dog or two is a good thought. Be safe.

Things like this will continue with the advent of AB109, where they let the criminals run free...Some county jails just do a catch and release, some hold them them for a few days then release...It will only get worse... It is good you have an alarm and safe...

I'm surprised by this, especially since the firearms appeared to be the target. The next time they attempt this (at your place or another), they could end up on the wrong end of the gun and I think the police should be a little more concerned.

This happened in Concord. It was a few years ago, however the stories I've seen on the board lately along these lines ended up with people actually loosing guns. I thought I'd share a story that had a happier ending.

I have also set up cameras since covering all entrances and exits.

As far as cutting the phone cable, the company I'm with will respond if the phone line goes dead. So no worries there.

And yes it's good for them that I wasn't home at the time of the burglary.
